NSU and Colorado traded points throughout the early part of the first set, with Armstead's kill tying it up at 4-4. From there, though, Colorado scored two points for every one of NSU's to take a 16-9 lead. A kill from Ferreira and a service ace from Jarema sparked a 4-1 run that got the Spartans to within four, 17-13, but the Buffalos pulled away from there for the first-set win.
Jankauskaite had a pair of blocks with a kill in between to spark NSU to a 6-0 lead in the second set. The Buffalos chipped away at the lead, and then with the Spartans up 14-11 on a Johnson service ace, Colorado took the lead thanks to a 4-0 run. The Spartans did not back down, trading points with Colorado over the next 14 serves.
At that point, Colorado went up by a 24-21 margin on a 3-0 run. After Ferreira held off set point with a kill, the Buffalos ended any hope of a Spartan upset when Neira Ortiz Ruiz threw down a kill for a 25-22 win.
Colorado started off the third set with a 5-2 lead, and after a kill by Johnson made it 5-4, the Buffalos used a 6-2 run to get the lead to five, 11-6. A 9-1 run a little later got the lead into double digits, and although Armstead added three kills late in the set, Colorado's lead was too much to overcome.
Nikki Lindow had 11 kills on a .588 attack percentage to lead Colorado, with Ortiz Ruiz adding 10. The Buffalos hit .377 for the match and held the Spartans to a .140 percentage.
The Roadrunners began their match with the Spartans up by a 9-5 score, and a 12-2 run later in the set put them up by a 22-10 score. At that point, NSU countered with an 8-1 run, with three kills from Armstead during that time, to make it 23-18. A pair of errors on the Spartans, though, gave the Roadrunners the first set.
CSU Bakersfield jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the second, but Armstead and Jankauskaite each tallied a pair of kills as NSU cut the deficit to four, 13-9. The Roadrunners got the lead to five and then later to nine, 23-14, after a 4-0 run. Ferreira knocked down two kills as the Spartans made it 24-18 before an error on NSU shifted things to the third set.
NSU had to dig out of an early 5-0 hole in the third, but after Armstead's service ace made it 5-3, CSU Bakersfield stretched the lead to six, 12-6. Kills from Armstead, Jankauskaite and redshirt sophomore
Kylee Thiim made it 14-10, and then after a 4-0 run by CSU Bakersfield, NSU countered with its own 4-0 run for an 18-14 Roadrunner lead. The Spartans, though, got no closer than four the rest of the way.
Debora Araujo had 10 kills to lead the Roadrunners, who hit .282 for the match. Mariah Alvidrez tallied 18 assists, while Julia Bowen added seven blocks and four kills.
The Spartans will return home to host the Spartan Invitational Sept. 21-22 at Joseph Echols Hall. South Carolina State, Texas-Pan American, Hampton and NSU will each play one match against the other three.
