BLACKSBURG, Va. – Sophomore
Brittney McCants and freshman
Kiara Howell both finished in the top 10 in two individual events this past weekend to pace the Spartan women's track team at the Hokie Invitational at Rector Fieldhouse.
McCants was fifth in the 60 meters (7.63 seconds) and ninth in the 200 meters (25.17) to highlight a solid showing for the NSU sprinters. Sophomore
Torie Cunningham was seventh in the 200 in 24.99 seconds, the best by an NSU female track athlete this season. Junior
Champagne Bell was ninth in the 400 meters in a season-best 57.15 seconds.
Howell was 10th in the both the shot put (41-9.25) and weight throw (personal-best 51 feet, 11.75 inches). Also faring well in the field events was sophomore
Kaydianne McKenzie, who leapt a personal-best 39-2.5 to place seventh in the triple jump.
Ra'Shaun Combs improved on her season-best effort in the 800 meters by two and a half seconds. Combs crossed the line in ninth place, in a time of 2:19.95.
Combs teamed with Bell, McKenzie and Cunningham to run the Spartans' best 4x400 relay team of the season. The group finished sixth in 3:53.96.
The Spartans are back in action next weekend at the Gene Anderson Invitational hosted by the University of North Carolina.
