UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.
Champagne Bell's victory in the long jump led a strong showing in the field events for the Spartan women's track team at the Penn State Relays at Ashenfelter Track on Saturday.

Bell's top jump was 19 feet, 2 inches. That came on her last attempt after fouling in four of her first five tries.

Sophomore Kaydianne McKenzie also jumped well Saturday, taking a second-place finish in the triple jump while placing sixth in the long jump. McKenzie's best leap was 38-0.75 in the triple jump, and her top mark in the long jump was 17-2.25.

Freshman Kiara Howell and sophomore Tiara Davis also posted top-five finishes in their events. Howell was third in the shot put (46-10) and Davis was second in the pole vault (10-2).

NSU also performed well on the track, posting seven top-five finishes. Rookie Brittney McCants had two of those, placing fourth in the 200 meters (season-best 25.39) and fifth in the 60 (7.62). She ran a season-best 60m time of 7.56 in the prelims.

In the 200m, McCants led a 4-5-6 effort from the Spartan sprinters. Torie Cunningham was fifth (25.41), just ahead of Rayiana Johnson (25.43).

In the longer 500m distance, junior Ashley Sessoms recorded a fifth-place finish with a time of 1:20.74. The top five places in that event were all decided by less than one second.

Another first-year sophomore, Ra'Shaun Combs, was second in the 1,000 (3:13.93). Tori Lewis-Johnson was fourth (3:19.68) in the same event.

Freshman Jazmine Vaughan provided another highlight for the Spartans with her fourth-place finish in the 60 meter hurdles. Vaughan ran an 8.92 in the prelims and a season-best 8.84 in the finals.

NSU is off next weekend before competing at the CNU Captains Invitational Jan. 19-20 in Newport News.
