WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Sophomore tennis player Samuel Lemberger wrapped up the three-day Wake Forest Fall Invitational on Sunday with a fifth place finish in singles competition to cap off a successful weekend for the Spartans.
Lemberger won his opening match against Elon's Dan Sabik, 7-5, 6-2, before falling to East Carolina's Jared Morris, 6-3, 6-4. Lemberger also posted a 6-4, 6-3 win against Liberty's Guillem Secanel.
Sophomore Dzmitry Zyhmantovich claimed the 11th place title in flight A1 with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Wake Forest's Anthony Delcore. Zyhmantovich fell to Liberty's Shea Thomas, 6-4, 6-2 before defeating Davidson's Ricky Saad, 6-3, 6-2. Zyhmantovich also suffered a 6-4, 6(2)-7, 4-6 loss to UNCG's Ahmet Sarioglu.
In flight C1 junior Peter Ramstromer-Pello finished 12th after falling to North Carolina State's Ryan Newman, 6-2, 7-6(0) in the opening match. Ramstromer-Pello then went on to defeat Liberty's Stan Vaughn, 6-1, 6-1, before falling to UNC Wilmington's Karan Salwan, 6-4, 6(4)-7, 3-6 in the next match.
Junior Daniel Grauel competed in flight B2 where he finished fourth after he suffered a 6-1, 6-0 loss to Penn State's Roman Trkulja. Grauel was also defeated by Wake Forest's Jaya Billa, 6-1, 7-5, as well as Penn State's Michael Reilley, 7-5, 6-3.
In flight A2, sophomore Robin Riethmueller finished 13th. He posted a 4-6, 7-6(3), 7-6(3) win against All-SoCon player Randy Phillips of UNCG. Riethmueller also suffered a pair of losses as he fell to Brett Clark of the University of North Carolina, 6-2, 6-2, as well as Wake Forest's Jon Ho, 6-1, 6-4.
Junior Igor Braga competed in flight C2, where he claimed the 15th place title with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Lenoir-Rhine's Robin Hochguertel. Braga also lost a pair of matches as he was defeated by Liberty's Jorge Azuero, 6-1, 6-3, as well as South Carolina State's Stanislav Baco, 6-4, 6-0.
The Spartans did well in doubles play, where they claimed a pair of bracket titles.
Zyhmantovich and Ramstromer-Pello teamed up to take second place in flight B. In the opening round, they suffered an 8-5 loss to Wake Forest's Nolan Bauer and Nicky Kunz. However, they came back strong and won three consecutive matches. In the second round they defeated Furman's Joel Cook and Luke Synn, 8-6. The duo went on to beat South Carolina State's Baco and Martin Kobza, 8-3, before closing things out with an 8-3 win over UNCG's Randy Phillips and Cameron Smith.
Lemberger and Grauel claimed the second place victory in flight D. They opened competition with an 8-6 loss to Elon's Dan Sablik and Christopher Geaslen, but posted an 8-6 win in their next match against Liberty's Secanel and Carson Greve. Lemberger and Grauel finished their doubles competition with an 8-7(5) win over Davidson's Alex Howard and Jordan Hart.
Closing out doubles play for NSU was Riethmueller and Braga. The pair teamed up in flight C, where they fell to Elon's Juan Madrid and Chris Humphreys in the opening match, 8-4. They also suffered an 8-7(4) loss to UNC Wilmington's Matt Kealy and Karan Salwan.
The Spartans will close out the fall tournament schedule at the ITA Regional in Blacksburg, Va., on Oct. 17-22.
