Men’s Tennis Competes at the UVa. Fall Classic

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Norfolk State men's tennis team claimed a few wins at the Virginia Fall Classic over the weekend.

In the Blue singles flight, sophomore Robin Riethmueller upended East Tennessee State's Roger Ordeig, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the opening round. Ordeig is an All-Atlantic Sun selection. Riethmueller then fell to Virginia Commonwealth's Michal Voscek, 2-6, 6-3, 3-6 in the second round, before falling to Radford's Nick Sayer, 6-3, 4-6, 3-10 in the fifth place bracket.

Sophomore Dzmitry Zyhmantovich competed in the Orange flight where he suffered a 6-2, 6-4 loss to David Biosca of ETSU in the first round of play and a 6-1, 1-6, 6-10 loss to James Madison's Sebastian Salinas in the consolation round. Zyhmantovich claimed the 13th place bracket with 6-3, 6-1 win over Old Dominion's Keon Wiggemans and a 6-1, 7-5 win against George Mason's James Lange.

In the White singles flight, sophomore Samuel Lemberger fell to Coastal Carolina's Roman Samed, 1-6, 6-2, 4-6 in the opening round. He also suffered a 6-2, 6-1 loss to Liberty's Stan Vaughan in the consolation match. Lemberger claimed the 13th place bracket title with a 7-5, 6-2 win against George Mason's Chris Borden.

Junior Daniel Grauel competed in the Black flight, where he fell to William & Mary's Will Juggins, 6-1, 7-6. Grauel then went on to beat George Mason's Nick Barker, 6-1, 6-0, as well as Longwood's Harry Kelleher, 5-7, 6-2, 10-5. Grauel suffered a 6-4, 6-4 loss to Liberty's Egon Samii in the next round.

In the Gold flight, junior Peter Ramstromer-Pello claimed the third place consolation bracket. Ramstromer-Pello fell to Ted Nilsson of Coastal Carolina, 6-1, 7-6 in the opening match. He then defeated Longwood's Roman Ilchev, 6-0, 6-0, before suffering a 6-1, 6-2 loss to the College of Charleston's Alon Faiman. Ramstromer-Pello finished out his singles competition with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Liberty's Guillem Secanel.

Senior Kent Austin competed in the Red singles bracket, where he fell to Coastal Carolina's Hunter Whalen, 6-2, 6-1. In the consolation rounds, Austin also lost to George Mason's Aaron Capitel, 6-1, 6-2, as well as Longwood's Bharani Sankar, 6-3, 6-1. He also suffered a 6-4, 4-6, 5-10 loss to Liberty's Sergio Mourelo in the 15th place bracket.

Closing things out in the singles competition was junior Igor Braga. Braga competed in the Green flight and posted a 6-1, 7-5 win over Coastal Carolina's Rick Timmerman in the opening match. He then fell to ETSU's Sebastian Yilera, 6-4, 4-6, 2-6, as well as Penn State's Rami Labna, 6-2, 7-6. Braga won the seventh place bracket with a 5-7, 6-2, 10-6 victory against Josh Record of the College of Charleston.

The Spartans lone win in doubles play came from Riethmueller and Braga in the Green flight. They paired up to defeat William & Mary's Aaron Chaffee and Addison Appleby, 8-2. Riethmueller and Braga fell to Wake Forest's Jaya Billa and Nolan Bauer, as well as to the College of Charleston's Gordon and Faiman, 8-7.

In the Orange flight, Zyhmantovich and Pello suffered an 8-3 loss to Wake Forest's Maksim Kan and Nicky Kunz. Grauel and Lemberger competed in the Gold flight and had a first round bye before falling to the College of Charleston's Zack Lewis and Matt Daly, 8-3. Grauel and Lemberger also fell to Princeton's Joshua Yablon and Ben Quazzo, 8-4.

NSU will return to action at the Wake Forest Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C., on Oct. 11-13.
