Williams Tops 1,000 Career Points in 85-63 Win Over UMES

Box Score NORFOLK, Va. – Junior Pendarvis Williams topped 1,000 career points and the Norfolk State men's basketball team won its 10th straight with an 85-63 win over UMES Monday night at Joseph Echols Hall.

NSU improved to 11-0 in the MEAC and 16-10 overall thanks to a dominating performance against the Hawks. Williams led NSU with 17 – he needed eight coming into the game to reach 1,000 – and NSU tied its season high with 85 points thanks to an opportunistic run-and-gun offense.

UMES dropped to 1-19 overall, 1-8 in the conference despite a game-high 20 points from Kevin Mays.

NSU, meanwhile, extended its Division I record win streak and maintained first place in the conference, one game ahead of North Carolina Central (10-0).

Williams sank a 3-pointer with 1:22 to go in the first half to top 1,000, helping NSU build an 11-point advantage at the break. The Hawks cut the deficit to nine early in the second half, but NSU went on a 12-2 run over a four and a half minute span to push the lead to 20, 64-44, with 10:02 to go.

After one last gasp from the Hawks got them to within 12, the Spartans immediately took the air out of their sails with a 11-0 run that essentially put the game out of reach with less than five minutes to go. NSU, up by 23 at that point, never let UMES get below a 20-point deficit the rest of the way.

Juniors Malcolm Hawkins and Brandon Goode joined Williams in double figures on the night. Hawkins added 16 on 6-of-10 shooting, while Goode posted his second straight double-double with 12 points on 5-of-10 shots with 11 boards. Williams hit 6-of-10 overall from the floor, including 3-of-4 from the 3-point line to help NSU finish the game 9-of-20 from beyond the arc.

The Spartans connected on 30-of-62 overall for the game (48.4 percent).

Goode and Hawkins combined to score 19 of the first 22 points of the contest for the Spartans to build a 22-14 lead at the 12:21 mark. Senior Kris Brown sank a pair of 3-pointers to push the NSU advantage to 11 with six minutes left in the half.

Williams, on the other hand, was held scoreless until hitting 1-of-2 from the line with 7:03 to go in the first half after UMES coach Frankie Allen was assessed a technical for vehemently arguing a call. Williams later hit a pair of treys late in the first stanza, including the latter at 1:22 that had some members of the crowd cheering even without an official PA announcement of him reaching 1,000.

Dominique Cowell sank a jumper for UMES with six seconds to go in the half to make it 46-35 in favor of the Spartans at the intermission.

With 10 points on the night, Cowell was the only other UMES player in double figures aside from Mays, who also added a game-best five steals. The 6-3 freshman scored 17 points in the first half but was held to just three in the second. Troy Snyder also added nine points and 10 boards for the Hawks.

Kris Brown and junior Riley Maye each came off the bench to add eight points, with Brown scoring all of his points in the first half. Junior Jamel Fuentes finished with a game-high seven assists to go with four steals.

UMES committed just 12 turnovers, compared to 15 for the Spartans, yet NSU had a 19-9 advantage in points off turnovers. The Spartans also won the rebounding battle, 42-33, and more than doubled up UMES in second chance points, 16-6.

Williams became the 30th all-time player at NSU to reach 1,000 career points.

NSU will head to Hampton next Monday for the second Battle of the Bay this season. Game time is set for 7 p.m. with an ESPNU broadcast.
