WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Led by a pair of relay victories and a first-place finish from
Champagne Bell in the long jump, the NSU women's track and field team racked up 11 top-10 finishes on Saturday at the Tribe Invitational hosted by the College of William & Mary.
Bell won the long jump easily with her best jump of 19 feet, 6 inches. That was roughly a foot and a half further than her closest competitor, Nicole Dory of William & Mary (18-0.25).
Six of the top-10 finishes came from the Spartans' field athletes. In addition to Bell's win,
Kaydianne McKenzie and
Kiara Howell each had two top-10s. McKenzie was fourth in both the long jump (17-5.25) and triple jump (37-1.75), while Howell was runner-up in both the shot put (43-3.25) and discus throws (147-8). Howell's sister,
Navia Howell, also had a strong showing with her seventh-place finish in the javelin (112-1).
In track events, the Spartans won both the 4x100 and 4x400 relay races. The 4x100 team of Bell, Cunningham,
Torie Cunningham and
Qua'Nesha Wallace clocked a time of 46.78 seconds to edge Virginia Union (46.82) for first place. Bell, Cunningham and McKenzie capped their busy day by teaming with
Ra'Shaun Combs to win the 4x400 relay in a time of 3 minutes, 51.82 seconds.
In individual track events, Wallace was third in the 100 meters (12.03 second), Cunningham placed fourth in the 400 (58.42) and Combs placed sixth in the 800 (2:18.17).
