GREENSBORO, N.C. – Norfolk State junior
Champagne Bell capped her second straight sweep of the yearly MEAC long jump titles by winning the outdoor title on Friday on the campus of North Carolina A&T.
Bell's second straight MEAC outdoor long jump championship helped NSU move into sixth place in the team standings with 25 points. Hampton leads with 41.
Bell's top jump was her second attempt, when she leapt 6.04 meters (19 feet, 9.75 inches). She beat runner-up Nakia Linson by 1.5 inches. Bell has now won five of the six MEAC indoor and outdoor long jump titles in her career, missing out only at the outdoor championship her freshman year (2011), when she placed second.
NSU also got points Friday from freshman
Kiara Howell, who placed fifth in the shot put. Her best throw was 14.07 meters (46-2).
In Friday's running prelims, sophomore
Torie Cunningham advanced to the final by placing eighth overall in the 100 meters. She clocked a time of 11.80 seconds. In addition, freshman
Jazmine Vaughan posted a personal-best in the 100 meter hurdles with a tie of 14.48 seconds. She was the seventh qualifier for Saturday's final.
