GREENVILLE, N.C. – The Norfolk State women's tennis team wrapped up play at the ECU Invitational on Saturday, coming away with several wins against fellow MEAC school North Carolina Central on the second day of the tournament hosted by East Carolina.
Junior
Andrea Macchiavello had a hand in two victories, as she defeated Aissa Muamba 6-4, 6-4 and also teamed up with sophomore
Liza Gordeeva for an 8-6 win over Rebecca Wood and Ekaterina Nekrasova. The Spartans competed at J.H. Rose High School on Saturday, with Friday's Day 1 action at River Birch Tennis Park.

Mafalda Lhorca also earned a victory over N.C. Central, a 6-2, 6-4 triumph over Lynsey Cover. Senior
Krystal Scott earned a doubles win with ECU's Meredith Smith, as they downed the Eagle duo of Tamara Jeremic and Lynsey Cover by an 8-1 score.
Muamba and Mia Ramic gave the Eagles a victory in doubles over NSU and prevented a Spartan sweep, as the N.C. Central duo shut out Lhorca and senior
Yvonne Kamegne, 8-0.
N.C. Central also triumphed in the other three singles matches against NSU. Wood downed Gordeeva 6-1, 6-1, and Nekrasova defeated Kamegne 6-1, 6-3. Scott rallied to win the second set over Ramic, 6-1, after falling in the first set, 6-4. Ramic, though, came away in the third-set tiebreaker, 10-8.
Later in the day on Saturday, NSU faced Appalachian State in doubles. Gordeeva and Macchiavello nearly upset Clare Cox and Mackenzie Lasure but ultimately fell by an 8-7 margin. Lhorca and Kamegne dropped an 8-4 contest to Melissa Machado and Megan Mullen, while Scott and Smith came up on the wrong end of an 8-2 setback to Zupan and Armellino.
The Spartans opened up the tournament on Friday with two difficult matches against ECU and UNC Wilmington. Against the host Pirates, Gordeeva dropped a 6-4, 7-6(2) match to Maria Gomez, and Kamegne gave it a ride against Dana Gray before coming up short, 7-6(4), 6-4.
In the other three matches, Macchiavello fell to Maria Storozheva, 6-1, 6-2, Scott lost to Sarah Sarjoo, 6-3, 6-1, and Lhorca succumbed to Katie Hoch, 6-0, 6-1.
Lhorca came closest to earning a victory against UNC Wilmington, winning the second set 6-0 against Christin Kaupper after dropping the first set, 6-1. Kaupper, though, won the third-set tiebreaker 10-7.
Gordeeva fell by a 6-3, 6-2 score to Annika Sillanpaa, and Kamegne lost to Alix Theodossiou, 6-1, 6-4. Hamilton Lovett defeated Scott, 6-0, 6-1, and Alyssa Ritchie was up 7-5, 3-2 over Macchiavello before the match was retired.
NSU closed out Friday's action with a doubles match against Campbell. The Spartans were unable to get their first win of the day, with Gordeeva and Macchiavello falling to Tamara Stanic and Irina Karangozishvili, 8-2. Kamegne and Lhorca were shut out by Maud Mrad and Georgina Segarra, 8-0, while Scott and ECU's Smith dropped an 8-1 contest to Ana Ortiz and Camila Valencia.
NSU will wrap up the fall tennis season at the Wofford Invitational this Friday through Sunday.
