CHESAPEAKE, Va. – The No. 19 Norfolk State bowling team won its opening match on Saturday during the second day of the MEAC Championship, but the Spartans dropped their next two contests to bow out of the tournament at the AMF Lanes in Chesapeake.
NSU saw its 2013-14 season come to a close during the double-elimination, bracket round of the championship. The Spartans, seeded fourth after Friday's qualifying rounds, started off strong with a 4-1 Baker win over No. 5 seed Bethune-Cookman.
UMES then swept the Spartans by a 4-0 score, sending NSU to the loser's portion of the bracket. Delaware State, seeded third, also picked up a 4-0 victory over the Spartans to knock NSU out of the tournament.
Norfolk State finished its campaign this year with a 58-44 overall record.
It also marked the final competition for NSU's lone senior,
Thea Aspiras, the most accomplished bowler in Spartan history.
A four-time first-team All-MEAC performer, Aspiras ended her senior year with a 200.4 average, the second-best of her career. She garnered numerous accolades during her four years at NSU, including the MEAC Rookie of the Year award and a pair of All-American honors.
She was also named the Most Outstanding Performer during the 2012 MEAC Championship when the Spartans secured their first-ever conference title.
Aside from Aspiras, NSU is expected to bring back every other member of its nine-player roster for next year, including seven who had junior eligibility this year.
UMES will face the winner of North Carolina A&T-Florida A&M tomorrow in the championship match.
