VCU Tops NSU, 7-0

RICHMOND, Va. – The Norfolk State men's team's three match win streak came to an end as the Spartans fell to VCU, 7-0, on Thursday afternoon at the Thalhimer Tennis Center.

NSU (8-6) opened up the match against the Rams (13-9) in doubles play. Dzmitry Zyhmantovich, who was named the MEAC Player of the Week on Wednesday, teamed up with Peter Ramstromer-Pello at the No. 1 spot. They fell to Alexis Huegas and Nick Jones, 8-5. Robin Riethmueller and Igor Braga competed at the No. 2 position, where they suffered an 8-5 loss to Michal Voscek and Wilder Pimentel. Kent Austin and Daniel Grauel rounded out the doubles competition with an 8-1 loss to Alejandro Argente and Jean Baptiste Mateo.

The Spartans continued to struggle as they moved on to singles play. Huegas upended Zyhmantovich at the No. 1 position, 7-6(2), 6-3. The loss ends an 11 match singles win streak for Zyhmantovich. Riethmueller competed at the No. 2 spot, where he fell to Argente, 6-1, 6-1. In the No. 3 position, Baptiste Mateo claimed a 6-2, 6-3 win against Braga. Ramstromer-Pello suffered a 6-4, 6-2 loss to Voscek. Grauel competed at the No. 5 spot, where he was upended by Velickovic, 6-0, 6-4. Closing out singles play was Austin, who fell to Pimentel, 6-1, 6-1.

NSU's match with Randolph-Macon on Friday has been ruled a default win in favor of the Spartans. NSU will play James Madison on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Richmond, Va.
