NORFOLK, Va. – Five Norfolk State University football players earned All-MEAC honors for the 2015 season as the conference office released its postseason awards on Monday.
Senior linebacker
Deon King and senior cornerback
D'Metrius Williams were voted to the All-MEAC first team. Senior offensive lineman
Mike Phillips earned a spot on the second team, while senior wide receiver
Isaac White and sophomore defensive lineman
Chris Lee were selected to the third team.
King led both levels of Division I football (FBS and FCS) in total tackles this season, with 163, and in tackles per game, at 14.8. That figure ranks as the second-highest in NSU's Division I era, trailing only Kevin Talley's FCS-record 195 in 12 games (16.3) during 2003. King, who moved to inside linebacker before the season after playing outside his first three seasons, also tallied 11 tackles for loss, three sacks, one interception, one pass deflection and one forced fumble. His three MEAC Defensive Player of the Week honors were the most of any player in the conference. This is King's third consecutive season earning All-MEAC honors, and second straight year on the first team.
Williams tied for the MEAC lead with 14 total passes defended this year, notching 12 pass deflections and two interceptions. Williams also tied for 15th nationally among FCS players with those 14 passes defended. He also had 41 total tackles (two for loss) and tied for first in the MEAC with three forced fumbles.
Phillips was NSU's most consistent lineman and one of the most versatile. Phillips started the first seven games of the season at right guard, then started the final four contests at center after an injury to
Louis Humphrey. Phillips graded out at 90 percent on the year and finished his NSU career with a streak of 39 consecutive games started. He started games at center, guard and tackle over the course of his career.
Despite missing the first two games of the year, White still had a strong senior campaign. He finished fourth in the conference in receptions per game (4.2, 38 total) and receiving yards per game (52.9 ypg, 476 total). His seven receiving touchdowns were the third-most of any MEAC player. He had 100-yard games against Howard (10 catches, 150 yards) and Bethune-Cookman (10-126) and tied the school single-game record with three TD catches against B-CU. This is White's second career All-MEAC postseason honor, after earning first-team accolades last year.
Like King, Lee also changed positions heading into 2015 and flourished. A former tight end, Lee transitioned to defensive end this year and led all Spartan linemen with 53 tackles, 13.5 for loss and six sacks. Lee tied for fifth in the conference in sacks and tied for seventh in TFL. He had at least half a sack in six of NSU's eight MEAC contests.
North Carolina A&T running back Tarik Cohen and South Carolina State defensive lineman Javon Hargrave repeated as MEAC Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year, respectively. North Carolina Central running back Dorrel McClain was voted MEAC Rookie of the Year, while N.C. A&T's Brandon Parker was tabbed Offensive Lineman of the Year. Bethune-Cookman's Terry Sims was named MEAC Coach of the Year.
