Vince Brown Invitational ResultsNEWPORT NEWS, Va. –
Brianna Hayes won the high jump and the pole vault trio of
Tiara Davis,
Tasia Baxter and
Te'Shaibrah Myles all matched or exceeded season-best heights for the NSU women's track and field team at the Vince Brown Invitational hosted by Christopher Newport University on Sunday.
Hayes cleared 5 feet, 5 inches to win the high jump at the Spartans' final tune-up before the MEAC Indoor Championships this week. It was her second event title in the high jump this season.
Davis and Baxter both cleared 10-6 in the pole vault, finishing sixth and seventh, respectively. The 10-6 height matched Davis' indoor PR while representing a new indoor PR for the Baxter. Myles, meanwhile, matched her season best by clearing 10 feet even, taking 10th place.
In other field events,
Kaydianne McKenzie also performed well, placing fourth in the long jump (17-7.5).
The Spartans also fared well on the track, as both
Rachel Webb and
Jazmine Vaughan took third-place finishes. Webb clocked a season-best in the 3,000 meters (10:59.22) while Vaughan just missed hers in the 60 hurdles. Vaughan ran a preliminary time of 8.74, just behind the 8.73 she registered at Penn State last month. She then ran 8.79 in the finals, finishing as the top collegiate athlete in the race.
Junior college transfer
Fawzia Kheir also earned a top-five finish in her event, placing fourth in the 800 meters in 2:20.86.
The Spartans cap indoor season at this week's MEAC Indoor Championships, which run Thursday through Saturday at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex in Landover, Md.
