Spartan Baseball Returns Home to Face Coppin State; Series Schedule Rearranged

Live Stats (Same link - All 3 Games)  |  Live Video

NORFOLK, Va. –
After playing just one home game in its first 16 games of the season, the Norfolk State baseball team will finally – weather permitting, of course – host a three-game weekend series this Saturday and Sunday as Coppin State comes to Marty L. Miller Field.

Due to inclement weather in the area on Friday, the teams have modified the weekend schedule. They will now play only a single nine-inning game starting at 4 p.m. on Saturday, then a doubleheader beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday.

The Spartans have had three previous weekend series canceled due to inclement weather earlier in February and March, losing a total of 10 home games. NSU's only home game to date was a March 10 loss to Longwood.

NSU (6-10 overall, 3-3 MEAC North) also played its first two MEAC Northern Division series of the year on the road, dropping two of three at Delaware State on March 15-16 before taking two of three at UMES last weekend. This weekend marks the first of three straight scheduled home weekend series for the Spartans, with Delaware State slated to visit next weekend and UMES the weekend after that.

The Spartans have been led at the plate in the early going by sophomore outfielder Denathan Dukes and freshman catcher Ismael Herrera. Dukes paces NSU with a .342 batting average and has seven extra-base hits in the 12 games in which he's played. Herrera is hitting .326 on the season. Sophomore infielder Roger Hall has a team-leading 12 RBI.

The Spartans' normal weekend rotation of Matt Outman (2-1, 5.32 ERA), Devin Hemmerich (0-2, 6.35) and Stephen Butt (0-1, 3.78) all pitched well last weekend, combining to allow just five earned runs in 16.2 innings against UMES. They lead a pitching staff which ranks first in the MEAC and 37th nationally in strikeouts per nine innings (8.6).

CSU (1-16, 0-6 MEAC North) comes into this weekend on a 12-game losing streak following a 17-5 setback against Lehigh on Wednesday. The Eagles were swept by DSU and UMES in their first two MEAC series of the year, though three of the losses were by three runs or less.

Freshman George Dragon has been a force for the Eagles at the plate, leading the team with a .365 average and 12 RBI. He and outfielder Jack Kraft have each hit two home runs.
