Bruno's Walk-Off Hit Sends Spartans to Sweep of Coppin State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NORFOLK, Va. – Mikey Bruno hit a one-out walk-off RBI double in the bottom of the 11th inning to help Norfolk State rally for a 6-5 win in the nightcap of Sunday's doubleheader with Coppin State, finishing a weekend sweep of the Eagles at Marty L. Miller Field.

NSU (9-10 overall, 6-3 MEAC North) won Sunday's game one, 10-2, by pounding out a season-high 17 hits against the Eagles (1-19, 0-9).

Shortstop Roger Hall had seven hits on Sunday. He had a career-high four in the opener and three, including the game-tying RBI single in the bottom of the ninth, in the nightcap.

In game two, starting pitchers Anderson Burgess (CSU) and Stephen Butt (NSU) matched each other through five scoreless innings before a wild sixth inning ensued. CSU took advantage of three NSU errors and two hits, including a two-run single by Alenjandro Hernandez, to score four runs.

NSU answered quickly with three in the bottom of the sixth. The Spartans got three straight hits to start the inning as Tony Leite pinch hit with an infield single and advance to third on a double by Hall. Both runners scored on Rosario's sharp single to center. With two outs, Rosario scored from second on a two-out CSU error to bring NSU within 4-3.

The Spartans tied it in the bottom of the eighth. Pinch hitter Noah Johnson reached on a bunt single, then stole second and third bases before scoring the tying run on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Kilmon.

The Eagles wouldn't go away, taking a 5-4 lead on Darien Percell's RBI single in the top of the ninth. But NSU wouldn't be denied. Denathan Dukes drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the ninth and moved to third on a groundout. Hall then smacked a line drive over the shortstop's head for the tying run.

Spartan freshman Michael Parmentier held CSU scoreless in the 10th and 11th innings and NSU capitalized in the bottom of the 11th. Alex Mauricio led off with a sharp single off the CSU shortstop's glove. Dukes sacrificed Mauricio to second. Bruno followed with a deep shot over the head of right fielder George Dragon and Mauricio scored the winning run easily.

Parmentier (2-0) earned the win with 2.2 scoreless innings of relief. He allowed just one hit and struck out a career-high five batters.

Desean Rabb (0-2) took the loss for the Eagles, allowing one run and two hits in 1.1 innings of work.

Butt fanned a season-high seven hitters in five-plus innings and allowed just two hits. All three runs he allowed were unearned.

Hall was 3-for-5 with a double and Dukes went 2-for-4 in the nightcap.

The opener was all NSU after the first inning. The Eagles scored an unearned run in the top of the first off NSU starter Devin Hemmerich, but NSU scored the game's next 10 runs. Hall notched his first career four-hit game, and the first for NSU this season, going a perfect 4-for-4. Kilmon also had career highs in hits and RBI, finishing 3-for-3 with four RBI including a double and a triple. Rosario doubled twice in four at-bats, while Syeed Mahdi and Robbie Hiser both went 2-for-2.

Mahdi and Kilmon hit run-scoring doubles and Omar Hotusing an RBI single in NSU's four-run second inning that put the Spartans in the lead to stay.

Kilmon tacked on an RBI triple in the third and a two-run single in the fifth for the Spartans. Hall stroked an RBI double in the fourth.

The Spartans hit a season-high six doubles among their season-high eight extra-base hits in the opener. Mahdi added a triple for NSU and Rosario doubled twice.

Hemmerich (1-2) earned his first win of the season after pitching his second straight complete game. He allowed just five hits and two runs, both unearned, over a season-high seven innings. He did not walk a batter and struck out four.

Hall ended the day 7-for-9 with two RBI. Kilmon had four hits and five RBI in the doubleheader, while Dukes, Mahdi and Rosario had three hits apiece.
