Box Score BALTIMORE, Md. – A day after winning a pair of close calls against Morgan State, the Norfolk State softball team had a much easier time on Sunday during an 11-2 victory in the series finale.
NSU won two games by one run each on Saturday and then finished the sweep of the Bears on Sunday in just five innings at Lois T. Murray Field. First-place NSU moved to 8-1 in the MEAC Northern Division on the season as well as 9-17 overall after its fifth straight win.
Morgan State (3-23, 2-5 MEAC) took the early lead in the game before NSU stormed back. The Spartans put a five-spot on the board in the second inning and later added three more runs in the fifth to win via the eight-run rule.
NSU pounded out 14 hits, including five doubles. Senior center fielder
Alina Moriarty hit 4-for-4 with one run and three RBI, posting the first four-hit game of her career. Junior third baseman
Whitney Williams batted 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI and also added her third home run of the season.
Senior catcher
Sommer Di Fulgo and junior right fielder
Megan Dunning each batted 2-for-2 on the day. Dunning drove in three runs, while Di Fulgo had a pair of RBI and scored two runs as well.
The Bears scored first in the bottom of the first on a pair of RBI hits with one out. But Spartan starter
Marissa Marrero recorded the last two outs of the inning with a runner on third to prevent any more damage.
NSU saw its bats come alive in the second. An error and then a double by sophomore shortstop
Mikki Haury put runners on second and third. Di Fulgo's single drove in a pair of runs, and after a walk to Dunning, freshman second baseman
Seana Moriarty doubled to center field to make it 3-2 in favor of the Spartans.
Moriarty and Dunning then came home on a single by
Alina Moriarty.
Dunning hit an RBI single in the third, and Williams drove in
Alina Moriarty with a homer to left center in the top of the fourth. Up 8-2 at that point, the Spartans scored three more in the fifth for the final margin. Haury led off the inning with a single, and Di Fulgo doubled to put runners on second and third.
Dunning hit one past the pitcher to score both, and a little later in the inning
Alina Moriarty hit an RBI single to score her sister Seana.
Marrero (7-9) settled down after that rough start, allowing just two earned runs on six hits with three strikeouts in all five innings. She gave up just two hits over the last four innings of the game.
Haury and
Seana Moriarty each scored a pair of runs.
The Spartans will host Longwood for a non-conference doubleheader at 5 p.m. on Thursday before welcoming Delaware State to town next weekend. Saturday's twinbill against the Hornets will also serve as Senior Day.
