Box Score 2 NORFOLK, Va. – A total of 30 hits on the day provided plenty of offense for Delaware State, as the Hornets swept a MEAC doubleheader from the Norfolk State softball team, 11-2 and 14-9, on Saturday afternoon at the NSU Softball Field.
After managing just two runs in the first inning of game 1, the Spartan offense had a much better showing in the second contest. DSU, though, got big performances from the heart of its lineup to win both games. The losses dropped NSU to 9-21 overall and 8-3 in conference play, while DSU improved to 13-21 and 7-4.
The Hornets have now won six in a row and have scored in double figures in all six.
DSU's Vanessa Washington batted 4-for-5 with two runs and four RBI in game 2, while Jordan Stamps hit 3-for-5 with two runs and five RBI. Every time NSU scored, the Hornets had an answer in that second contest.
Washington hit an RBI single in the first, while sophomore first baseman
Kayla McNair's heads-up running in the second tied the score at 1-1 on an RBI groundout. The Hornets plated four runs in the third, but senior right fielder
Alina Moriarty got a run back in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single into right.
DSU made it 7-2 in the fourth on Washington's two-run homer, but the Spartans tallied three runs in their half of the frame. McNair doubled to lead off the inning, and a walk and then a single by senior catcher
Sommer Di Fulgo loaded the bases. Junior center fielder
Heather Dunning followed with a sharp single into center to score two runs, and Moriarty added an infield hit later on to score the third run.
Danielle Velez' two-run single in the fifth highlighted a four-run inning for DSU, giving the Hornets an 11-5 lead. In the sixth, the Spartans cut the deficit to two thanks to four runs of their own.
A walk and two singles loaded the bases, and sophomore left fielder
Devon Bitler brought home a run on a hit in front of the plate. Moriarty followed with a single to center, and two outs later freshman
Megan Przeslawski singled in two more runs.
Stamps, though, gave DSU some insurance with a three-run homer in the seventh.
Moriarty batted 3-for-4 with three RBI on Senior Day, while Dunning and Przeslawski each drove in a pair. Bitler, McNair, Dunning and Di Fulgo each had three hits on the day in addition to Moriarty's three-hit game in the second contest.
In the first game, NSU struck first in the bottom of the first inning when Bitler beat out a dribbler in front of the plate and junior third baseman
Whitney Williams hacked at a pitch high in the strike zone and deposited it over the center field fence.
It was all DSU after that, though. The Hornets scored five runs in the second, highlighted by Chloe Oro's two-run double into right center. Oro hit an RBI single in the fourth for a 6-2 Hornet lead, and then DSU added five more runs in the sixth for the final margin. Washington hit a two-run single into left, and later in the frame Velez doubled to the fence in left to plate two more runs.
Tara Tursellino gave up two earned runs on seven hits in a six inning game. She also picked up the win in relief in the second contest to improve to 9-14.
The two teams will finish out the series Sunday at noon.
