Box Score 2 PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Maryland Eastern Shore's Jesse Stinnett and Tanner Whiteman managed to cool off Norfolk State's red-hot bats, holding the Spartans to five hits during Saturday's 2-1, 1-0 doubleheader sweep by UMES at Hawk Stadium.
Â
UMES right hander Stinnett outdueled Spartan lefty
Matt Outman in the opener as the Hawks broke NSU's school-record 13-game winning streak, the second-longest active streak in the nation entering Saturday's games. In game two, the Hawks (15-26, 13-7), who did not get a hit for the first 6.2 innings in the seven-inning game, walked off with the win after Justin Dattilo tripled and scored on a two-out grounder that got past the NSU (19-12, 15-5) infield.
Â
In the nightcap, neither team had a hit for the first five innings. Spartan left fielder
Denathan Dukes broke up the double no-hitter with a one-out single in the top of the sixth. Dukes stole second and advanced to third on a flyout, but was stranded when Whiteman got
Roger Hall to fly out to end the inning.
Â
Hemmerich (3-3), meanwhile, pitched his second straight masterpiece. Hemmerich carried a perfect game into the fifth, which ended when he walked Greg Turlik with one out after setting down the first 13 Hawk batters of the day.
Â
UMES did not get its first hit of the day until what proved to the final inning. In a scoreless tie in the bottom of the seventh, Dattilo lined a hit into left field that Dukes dove for trying to preserve the no-hitter. The ball fell and rolled past by Dukes for a triple. Turlik was the next batter and hit a bouncer to second that went through the legs of second baseman
Syeed Mahdi but scored as a single, allowing the winning run to score.
Â
Hemmerich, the reigning MEAC Pitcher of the Week, officially allowed two hits in 6.2 innings, striking out seven. That came on the heels of his two-hit shutout at Coppin State last week.
Â
Whiteman (3-4), though, pitched his second one-hit shutout against the Spartans this year. He also did it back on March 21, also with Hemmerich opposing him. Whiteman walked two and struck out five on Saturday.
Â
Game one saw Stinnett work all nine innings to beat NSU and Outman, the league's leader in victories, for the first time this season. The Spartans took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on a solo home run by first baseman
Ryan Kilmon, his second of the season.
Â
After striking out five times in the first three innings against Outman, the Hawks finally got to the junior lefty with a pair of two-out runs in the fourth. Isaiah Chambers led off with a bunt single and scored on Turlik's two-out single to center. After a walk to Skylar Murray, Connor Breslin double to center field to score Turlik.
Â
The Spartans threatened in the ninth as Kilmon led off with a double. Pinch hitter
Andre' Moore popped out on a bunt attempt, however, and Stinnett struck out pinch hitter
Kyle Vaas and got Dukes to ground out to end it.
Â
Outman (6-2) also had his own personal win streak end Saturday. He had earned a win in five straight starts before taking the hard-luck loss Saturday. He allowed six hits and two runs while fanning nine hitters in 7.2 innings. Stinnett (4-4) yielded just four hits and walked four with five strikeouts.
Â
The teams cap their series with a 3 p.m. game on Sunday. The start has been pushed back due to inclement weather. NSU still holds a two-game lead over UMES in the MEAC Northern Division and owns the season tie-breaker over the Hawks. With a win, NSU would clinch at least a share of the division title and lock up the No. 1 seed from the division in next month's MEAC tournament. The Spartans need two wins in their final four conference games of the year to win their first-ever MEAC regular-season division title outright.
