Box Score NORFOLK, Va. – Matt Outman threw six shutout innings and
Denathan Dukes went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI to lead Norfolk State to a 10-0, seven-inning win over Coppin State on Saturday night at
Marty L. Miller Field.
Â
After Saturday, the Spartans (21-13, 17-5 MEAC North) have officially clinched their first-ever MEAC Northern Division regular-season title. Second-place UMES lost earlier in the day to Delaware State to clinch that feat before NSU took the diamond Saturday night. Still, the Spartans were on top of their game, with Outman (7-2) cruising through six innings with nine strikeouts and the offense collecting 13 hits to win by the 10-run rule.
Â
Dukes led off the bottom of the first with a single and stole second. He scored on an RBI single by
Roger Hall to give the Spartans the early 1-0 lead.
Â
Coppin State (3-36-2, 2-20) starter Yayha Muhammad (0-12) kept NSU at bay the next three innings before NSU broke things open with a six-run fifth inning. Dukes again was in the middle of the rally as he led off with a triple to right field and scored on
Robbie Hiser's double. Hiser scored on Hall's second RBI single of the day. Dukes capped the six-run inning with a two-run double as NSU sent 11 men to the plate in the inning.
Â
Pinch hitter
Kyle Vaas stroked a two-run double and scored on
Mikey Bruno's RBI double to push the lead to 10-0 in the sixth.
Â
That was plenty of support for Outman. He allowed a second-inning single to Lance Montano and a third-inning bunt single to Alejandro Hernandez, but that was all. Outman fanned nine for the second straight start. He has five games with at least that many punchouts this season.
Â
Cooper Jones pitched a scoreless seventh for NSU.
Â
Hall finished 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI for the Spartans, while Kilmon went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Bruno finished 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored.
Â
The teams play their final MEAC regular-season games tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
