Kiara Howell won the MEAC Outdoor Championships' Most Outstanding Field Athlete award for the third year in a row to propel the Spartan women's track and field team to a fourth-place finish at the conference outdoor championship meet on Saturday on the campus of North Carolina A&T.
The Spartans finished the meet with 76 points, trailing only Florida A&M (111), Hampton (105) and Bethune-Cookman (92.33).
Howell won her second gold medal of the week on Saturday, capturing the javelin throw title with a best throw of 43.58 meters (143 feet). That came two days after she won the gold medal in the discus throw, the Spartans' only other first-place finish at the meet. Howell also placed fourth in the shot put on Friday to finish with 25 of NSU's 76 points. Howell shared the field MOP award as a freshman in 2013 before winning it by herself each of the last two years.
The Spartans made a strong showing all the way around on Saturday. Senior
Tiara Davis cleared a personal-best 3.39 meters (11 feet, 1.5 inches) in the pole vault, but settled for the silver medal as North Carolina A&T's Morgan Knight won the championship with a height of 3.49m (11-5.25). Spartans
Te'Shaibrah Myles (3.19m, 10-5.5) and
Tasia Baxter (3.09m, 10-1.5) finished third and sixth, respectively, in the pole vault, traditionally a strong event for NSU.
Also in the field, senior
Kaydianne McKenzie captured sixth place in the triple jump with a top leap of 11.94 meters (39-2.25).
Three Spartans earned top-five finishes on the track Saturday. Junior
Jazmine Vaughan set a new personal record in the 100 meter hurdles for the second day in a row. She clocked a time of 13.74 seconds to finish as the runner-up in that event, her highest-ever finish at a conference championship. Knight won the event in 13.59 seconds.
Senior
Brittney McCants came close to her PR in the 100 meters, but did clock a season-best time for the second day in a row. She crossed the finish line in 11.58 seconds to claim third place in her last conference meet as a Spartan.
Junior
Rachel Webb also posted her highest-ever finish at a conference outdoor track meet. She claimed fourth place in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (11 minutes, 29.19 seconds).
