Gordeeva, Cvjetkovic Go Undefeated for Spartan Women at CNU Invite

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Norfolk State women's tennis team picked up several wins over the weekend when the Spartans took on Christopher Newport in the CNU Invitational at the James T. and Sarah C. Eyre Courts.

NSU won four of the five singles matches, while the Spartan duo of junior Liza Gordeeva and sophomore Dajana Cvjetkovic won both of their doubles matches in the team's second weekend of competition this fall season.

"I was pleased that the women maintained their momentum from last weekend," said head coach Worth Richardson. "They are playing with an immense amount of discipline and composure right now, and their results are showing it."

In singles on Sunday, Cvjetkovic won at what was in essence the top spot in the lineup, 6-0 and 6-1, over McKinney Harwood. Gordeeva was also successful in her matchup at the third spot, 6-1 and 6-2, against Katie Carlson.

The two Spartans also defeated Carlson and Harwood in doubles, 8-2, and swept the CNU duo of Claire Dockrill and Logan Eldridge, 8-0, in the second round, both on Saturday.

Senior Andrea Macchiavello lost the first-set tiebreaker, 7-5, to fall 7-6 against Alexandra Drye at the second singles position. Macchiavello, though, rebounded to win 6-2 in the second set and 10-5 in the third-set tiebreaker. She also teamed up with freshman Marta Gomar for an 8-5 victory over Drye and Kate Huck in doubles. They ultimately fell to Carlson and Harwood by an 8-6 score in the second round of doubles.

Junior Ana Popovic dropped a 6-4, 6-3 matchup at No. 5 singles against Huck. Drye and Huck also came away with an 8-7 doubles win over Popovic and CNU's Isabelle Wessel in the second round. Popovic and Emily Morgan of CNU also succumbed to Dockrill and Eldridge in the first round, 8-2.

The Spartans will compete at the Bison Invite at Bucknell this Friday and Saturday.

"It will be fun to see if we can perform at a high level for the third weekend in a row," Richardson stated. "Our players have met many challenges placed before them already, but to do so consistently over an extended amount of time is a huge step toward having what it takes to challenge for a MEAC Championship."
