Norfolk State Men's BasketballNORFOLK, Va. - The Norfolk State men's basketball team will attempt to sweep its second straight MEAC weekend while maintaining second place in the league when Savannah State comes to Joseph Echols Hall on Monday night. The two teams will tip-off at 8 p.m. or approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the women's game.
NSU sits in second in the leauge at 5-1 behind leader Hampton (7-0). Howard (3-1) and South Carolina State (5-2) are the next highest teams in the standings behind the Spartans, who have won four of their past five games.
The game against Savannah State has been designated Public Service Night.

Series HistorySavannah State is the MEAC school the Spartans have played the least by far, as this will only be the 11th meeting between the two programs. NSU owns a 7-3 edge in the series and has won all seven meetings while a Division I program, dating back to the 2004-05 season. The Tigers' three wins came in the late 1950s and early 60s before a 44-year gap until the next meeting.
About Savannah StateThe Tigers fell to Hampton on Saturday by a 75-52 margin to fall to 3-3 in the league and 7-10 overall. Savannah State enters Monday's game averaging just 62 points while giving up more than 71 per game. The Tigers do not shoot well in any of the three phases (39.9 percent overall, 30.6 from 3-point range, 62.6 from the foul line) while averaging 15.6 turnovers per game and getting outrebounded by five boards per contest. Opposing teams do turn it over nearly 15 times against the Tigers, who are led offensively by Troyce Manassa (12.7 points) and Christopher Martin (12.6). Lenjo Kilo (8.9 points) is the only other player averaging even five points per game. He is also tied for the team lead with 5.1 rebounds, while Martin leads the way with 2.3 assists.
Last Time OutNSU tied the school record for 3-pointers with 14 and used a first half in which it outscored South Carolina State 51-35 to earn an eventual 87-74 win over the Bulldogs on Saturday night at Joseph Echols Hall. NSU hit 10 3-pointers in the first half and had six players reach double figures in scoring. The Spartans shot 50 percent on 32-of-64 shooting, including better than 60 percent in the first stanza.
Charles Oliver led NSU with 19 points, thanks in part to a 6-of-12 effort from the 3-point line.
D'Shon Taylor and
Zaynah Robinson each had 13 points, and
Preston Bungei,
Alex Long and
Jonathan Wade tallied 10 points each. The Spartans outscored the Bulldogs 30-9 in points off turnovers.
MEAC StandingsHampton currently leads the MEAC at 7-0, with NSU second at 5-1. Howard (3-1) and South Carolina State (5-2) sit third and fourth, respectively, and are the only other schools above .500 on the season.
