Series History
The two teams competed every year from 1953-54 through 1996-97 before the Spartans moved to Division I. NSU owns a 65-37 overall record against Elizabeth City State, although the Vikings won the last meeting on Nov. 30, 2011. ECSU won 69-57 that night, the only meeting between the two teams since NSU moved up. The Vikings have won the last three games in the series. The game on Tuesday will not count toward ECSU's regular season record.
About Elizabeth City State
The Vikings opened the year with a pair of losses at a tournament at West Virginia State, including a 100-97 loss to U.Va.-Wise on Friday. Jordan Jones had 20 points and 13 rebounds in the season opener, while John Maynor (16 points) and Kyree Marshall (11 points, 11 rebounds) also made contributions. Then on Saturday, a 77-68 loss to West Virginia State, Elon Edwards tallied 15 points as the only player in double figures. Elizabeth City State connected on nine 3-pointers against U.Va.-Wise but only shot 1-of-13 against West Virginia State. Both opponents shot better than 50 percent against the Vikings.
Last Time Out
Norfolk State started off slow in a game that was delayed by the opposition's transportion trouble, but the Spartans eventually pulled ahead for a 78-58 win over Shenandoah on Sunday night in NSU's home opener in front of more than 3,000 fans. The Spartans shot 10-of-24 from 3-point range, with
Zaynah Robinson leading the charge with 18 points, seven assists, six rebounds and two steals.
Jonathan Wade and
Carrington Ward each scored 15 points, with Ward also adding five rebounds, two assists and two blocks. Shenandoah attempted 16 more shots at the charity stripe and was led by Kaimonne Douglas (20 points) and Malcolm Clark (17 points, nine rebounds).
Short Handed?
Norfolk State was attempting to win its first-ever game against an SEC school on Friday (the 2012 NCAA tournament win over current SEC member Missouri came when the Tigers were in the Big 12). NSU nearly pulled it off against Mississippi State despite having just nine of 13 players available, including three out due to injury. The Spartans held the lead for eight and a half minutes in the game and even cut a 12-point deficit down to two late in the contest thanks to a 12-2 run.
Something New and Shiny
Norfolk State debuted its brand new video board on Sunday night in its home opener against Shenandoah. The $1.6 million system includes a four-sided, high-definition video board display, nine new HD scorer's tables, four single-sided LED scoreboard displays, and brand new speakers and amplifiers throughout the arena.
The entire centerhung display, which includes an LED lower ring, measures 11 feet tall by 20.5 feet wide. The main video display stands eight feel wide by 16.5 feet tall on each side. Illuminated channel lettering featuring the words Norfolk State with 12-inch high letters also sit atop the displays.
Pack Your Bags
After Tuesday's contest against Elizabeth City State, NSU will hit the road for a 10-day trip as part of the Continental Tire Las Vegas Invitational. The Spartans play at Vanderbilt and Butler before flying out to Las Vegas for the second part of the tournament over Thanksgiving, all without returning to Norfolk until the end.
