FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Mary Washington won all three doubles matches to earn an eventual 5-4 win over the Norfolk State women's tennis team on Saturday morning at the UMW Indoor Tennis Center.
Â
The Eagles, playing their season opener at home, got going with those victories in doubles. That allowed Mary Washington to go up by a 3-0 score in the match. NSU (0-2) won four of the six singles matches, but the Spartans needed five wins for the overall match victory.
Â
Norfolk State got strong wins at the top of the lineup, with sophomore
Dajana Cvjetkovic topping Shelby Harris at the No. 1 spot, 6-1 and 6-0. Freshman
Marta Gomar did even better at the second spot, sweeping Caroline Mosberg by scores of 6-0 and 6-0.
Â
Junior
Liza Gordeeva picked up a 6-4, 7-5 victory at the fourth slot in the lineup against Chrissy Gaul. Senior
Mafalda Lhorca had to battle at the No. 6 position, winning in straight sets but needing to go into extra points. She won both sets by 7-6 scores, winning the first-set tiebreaker 7-5 and the second-set tiebreaker by a 7-2 margin.
Â
The Eagles ultimately came away with the win after taking the other two singles matches. At No. 5, Taylor Diffley downed junior
Ana Popovic, 6-3 and 6-1. Senior
Andrea Macchiavello won the first set over Kait Brogan at the third position, 7-5. Brogan, though, won the second set 7-6, including the 9-7 tiebreaker win despite Macchiavello having three match points. She also led Macchiavello 2-0 in the third set before the Spartan senior retired from the match.
Â
"The ladies put in an incredible performance in singles, cleaning up in the top two positions and winning a lot of close sets from 3 to 6 singles," said head coach
Worth Richardson. "Unfortunately, under Division III scoring, the 3-0 hole after doubles proved to be a bit too much. This was nevertheless a great performance from a Division I perspective, and we will look to build on our singles play and work hard to improve our doubles."
Â
Those struggles in doubles included an 8-6 loss at the second position, where Macchiavello and Lhorca succumbed to Smith and Diffley. At the third position, Mosberg and Sara Fioretti downed Gomar and Gordeeva, 8-5.
Â
The Eagles also won at the No. 1 slot, an 8-3 victory for Harris and Brogan against Cvjetkovic and Popovic.

NSU will stay on the road for a Sunday matchup at George Washington at 1 p.m.
