NORFOLK, Va. – James Madison swept doubles and only lost at No. 4 singles in defeating the Norfolk State women's tennis team by a 6-1 score on Saturday afternoon at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center on the campus of ODU.
Senior
Andrea Macchiavello picked up the victory at the fourth spot in the lineup, downing Emma Petersen by a 7-5, 6-1 score. The Dukes, though, improved to 5-3 on the year while dropping the Spartans to 1-4.
NSU nearly picked up a second victory at the top spot in the singles lineup. JMU's Timea Guibe won the first set over sophomore
Dajana Cvjetkovic, 7-6, including a 7-3 win in the tiebreaker. Cvjetkovic earned a 6-4 victory in the second set, but Guibe was able to pull out the win by taking the third-set tiebreaker, 10-7.
At the next two spots, freshman
Marta Gomar fell to Rachel Nelson by a 6-1, 7-6 score at No. 2 singles, which included a 7-5 tiebreaker score in the second set. Junior
Liza Gordeeva fell by scores of 6-3 and 6-3 to Kimmy Herrock at the third slot.
"The JMU women are a strong team, and I was very impressed with our play in singles," said head coach
Worth Richardson. "Tomorrow the ladies head to U.Va. to face a national title contending team, which I know is an experience they are really looking forward to."
At No. 5 singles, junior
Ana Popovic succumbed to Rebecca Harris, 6-3 and 6-0, while senior
Mafalda Lhorca dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision to Dylan Owens at the No. 6 spot.
JMU also won all three doubles matches, with Harris and Abby Amos earning the victory at the No. 1 position, 6-2 over Cvjetkovic and Popovic. Nelson and Petersen also claimed a 6-2 victory, this one coming at No. 3 doubles against Gordeeva and Gomar.
Herrock and Guibe, meanwhile, claimed a 6-1 win over Macchiavello and Lhorca at the second slot.
NSU will head to Virginia on Sunday for a 4 p.m. matchup in Charlottesville.
