Mahdi, Pitchers Lead Doubleheader Sweep of NJIT

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NORFOLK, Va. – Center fielder Syeed Mahdi went a perfect 5-for-5 in Monday's doubleheader, reaching base all eight times and driving in four runs to lead the Norfolk State baseball team to a 7-0, 6-1 sweep of New Jersey Institute of Technology at Marty L. Miller Field.

Jonathan Mauricio (1-0) and Chase Anderson (1-1) both picked up their first career pitching victories Monday, pitching the requisite four innings in Monday's seven-inning games. Mauricio pitched 4.1 scoreless innings with three strikeouts in Monday's opener, and Anderson fanned seven while yielding just one run in four frames of the nightcap to help NSU (3-5) win three of four in the series.

Mahdi had a hand in many of the Spartans' offensive rallies Monday. In game one, he singled in the bottom of the first and scored on Roger Hall's RBI single. In the fourth, Mahdi's RBI single scored Tony Leite to make it 2-0.

The Spartans tacked on five more runs in the sixth, all with two outs. Justin Lee singled and stole second before Mahdi singled him in. Hall tacked on another RBI single in the frame and Brian Beard capped the rally with a two-run double, his third two-bagger of the series.

That was more than enough for Mauricio, who was making his first career start. He allowed just three hits and walked two batters. Mahdi went 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI, while Beard and Hall had two hits apiece.

Mahdi got the Spartans off to a fast start in game two, leading off the bottom of the first with a double. He scored on Alex Mauricio's RBI single.

NJIT (2-5) tied it in the top of the second on a solo homer by Tom Brady. But the Spartans answered right back with five in the bottom of the second. After a walk, error and single by Chris Ford loaded the bases, Mahdi laced a two-run double down the right-field line. Hall followed with a two-run single and Beard knocked in a run with a fielder's choice to make it 6-1.

Anderson cruised after the second-inning homer. He yielded just three hits and walked one while striking out a career-best seven batters. Michael Parmentier and Matt Boone combined for three hitless innings of relief and four more strikeouts, giving NSU pitchers 11 punchouts in the game.

Mahdi went 2-for-2 with two more runs and two RBI in the nightcap. He walked twice and was also hit by a pitch during Monday's doubleheader, reaching base in all eight of his plate appearances. Ford had the first two hits of his career in game two, while Hall finished with four RBI on the day – two in each game.

The Spartans host North Carolina Central at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
