Series HistoryUMES won the previous meeting last year in Norfolk, 82-64 on Feb. 9, 2015. That broke a seven-game win streak by NSU, which still leads the all-time series 42-17. The two teams first played in 1953-54, the earliest meeting between the Spartans and any of the current members of the MEAC. Despite the loss last year, NSU has still won 23 of the last 26 meetings dating back to 2001-02.
About UMESThe Hawks have won four in a row after Saturday's 73-70 win over Hampton at home. UMES is now 8-16 overall and 5-4 in conference play. Dominique Elliott had 23 points against Hampton and is second on the team with 13.8 points while adding a team-best 7.3 rebounds. Devin Martin leads the way with 17.0 points, while Bakari Copeland also reaches double figures with 10.2. No other player averages even six points per game for a team that tallies 67 per contest but also gives up 76 points. Thanks in part to Elliott hitting better than 53 percent, the Hawks shoot 43.5 percent from the floor. But despite Martin hitting at a 37.1 percent clip from beyond the arc, UMES only shoots 32.8 percent as a team. The Hawks also turn the ball over nearly 16 times per game and allow teams to hit better than 46 percent from the floor.
Last Time OutJeff Short completed a 4-point play with 5.6 seconds left in the first overtime, and Howard failed to convert a field goal during the second extra session in a 99-92 Spartan win on Saturday at Burr Gymnasium. NSU's first two-overtime game in four seasons saw Howard erase a seven-point deficit with two minutes left in regulation. James Daniel had 34 points for Howard and scored 18 straight Bison points during the end of the second half and the first part of overtime. Short finished with 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting, while
D'Shon Taylor led the Spartans with 22 points on 7-of-13 from the floor.
Zaynah Robinson connected on 7-of-11 for a career-high 19 points as NSU finished 35-of-71 from the field. NSU scored its most points since tallying 99 against Coppin State last year.
MEAC StandingsAfter its loss on Saturday, Hampton fell to 8-2 and into a tie for first along with South Carolina State. The Spartans (7-2) not only stayed with those two schools with the win on Saturday at Howard, but no other team in the league even has three losses now. Bethune-Cookman, UMES and Howard each have four setbacks in MEAC play.
Norfolk State fell to Hampton but defeated South Carolina State, which handed Hampton its only loss this year to make each team 1-1 against the other two.
The Spartans have finished no worse than tied for third each of the last four years as well as fourth or better in the MEAC in eight of the last nine seasons.
Good from the LineNSU, which ranked No. 282 in the nation last year in free throw percentage, has improved its mark from 65.9 to 78.4 percent this season, which currently ranks the Spartans No. 1 in the nation ahead of St. Bonaventure (78.3). NSU is attempting to hit better than 70 percent this year for the first time since the 2003-04 season. The school record stands at 72.3 set in 1968-69.
On the year, the Spartans have shot 283-of-353 (80.2 percent) from the free throw line after intermission but just 145-of-195 (74.4 percent) beforehand. They have also hit 123-of-149 (82.6 percent) in the last five minutes and overtime of their games this year.
Good From Long RangeSo far this year, Norfolk State is hitting 37.6 percent from beyond the arc with 187 total treys, just 11 away from tying the school record of 198 set in 2011-12. NSU's current clip from long range ranks No. 50 in the nation. NSU is chasing the school's Division I record of 35.7 percent set in 1998-99. NSU ranks No. 100 in the nation in 3-pointers per game (7.8).
Conference StreakNSU needs one more win for its 18th straight season with a .500 or better record in the MEAC. In fact, in Norfolk State's 60 seasons in a conference, the program has had just one losing conference record (9-10 in the CIAA in 1990-91).
NSU is tied with Wisconsin for eighth in the nation for the longest streak of .500-or-better conference records in a row in Division I (See table page 5). NSU has posted 23 straight .500 or better conference records, dating back to that 1990-91 campaign.
