ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – South Dakota State fell behind 1-0 after losing two of three doubles matches against the Norfolk State women's tennis team, but the Jackrabbits won four of the six singles matches to earn a 4-3 win over the Spartans on Friday afternoon.

NSU was playing its third match in as many days at Sanlando Park during the team's spring break trip. A tiebreaker win at No. 2 doubles helped the Spartans (2-7) earn the early lead.

The senior duo of
Mafalda Lhorca and
Andrea Macchiavello topped Florencia Magni and Beatriz Souza in the tiebreaker, 7-3, to win the match, 7-6. The Spartans also won the third doubles position thanks to the play of junior
Liza Gordeeva and freshman
Marta Gomar. They earned a 6-2 triumph over Tacy Hawks-Lay and Morgan Brower.

S.D. State (9-6) did win at the top doubles position, where Iasmin Rosa and Ffion Davies swept junior
Ana Popovic and sophomore
Dajana Cvjetkovic, 6-0.

Lhorca and Macchiavello also picked up wins for NSU in singles. Macchiavello topped Haws-Lay at the fourth position, 6-1 and 6-3, while Lhorca pulled out a 6-4, 6-2 decision at No. 6 singles over Brower.

Cvjetkovic nearly earned a win at No. 1 singles, dropping the first set to Rosa, 7-6, including 7-4 in the tiebreaker. Rosa then won the next set, 6-4.

Gordeeva also game her opponent a run for her money. Facing Magni at the third slot, Gordeeva fell in the first set, 6-4, before losing the second, 7-5.

In the other two matches, Davies topped Gomar at No. 2 singles, 6-4 and 6-1, while Souza took care of Popovic by a 6-1, 6-1 score at the fifth singles position.

"This was a tough loss for the ladies, as we had a lot of opportunities in singles that we let slip away," said head coach
Worth Richardson. "However, this served as great preparation as we take on defending MEAC champion Bethune Cookman next."

NSU will finish out the spring break trip in Florida on Sunday when the Spartans play the Wildcats at 9 a.m. in B-CU's hometown, Daytona Beach.
