Box Score NORFOLK, Va. – Syeed Mahdi homered for the third time in four games and
Alex Mauricio tied his career high with three hits to lead Norfolk State to another come-from-behind win over Towson, giving the Spartans a series win over the Tigers with a 13-7 triumph on Sunday afternoon at
Marty L. Miller Field.
Mahdi hit the go-ahead RBI double in the fifth inning, then hit a three-run homer in NSU's eight-run seventh that broke the game open for the Spartans (6-9).
Mauricio doubled, scored three runs, stole home and also got the game's last out on the mound in the top of the ninth to help NSU clinch its first series win over a CAA team since a sweep of Hofstra in 2011.
Towson scored a pair of unearned runs off Spartan first-time starting pitcher
Matt Boone and led 2-0 in the fourth. The Spartans' first nine batters were set down in order by Towson starter Kevin Ross (1-1) before NSU finally broke through in the bottom of the fourth.
Denathan Dukes was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a wild pitch and later scored on a sacrifice fly by
Brian Beard.
The Spartans took the lead in the fifth. Mauricio led off with a double and advanced to third on an
Ismael Herrera sacrifice bunt. After Dukes was hit by a pitch again, he and Mauricio executed a steal of second base and home to tie the game. Mahdi followed with a two-out double to score Dukes with the go-ahead run.
Mauricio added an RBI single in the sixth and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Justin Lee. The Spartans then broke it open in the seventh.
Brian Beard,
Roger Hall and
Kyle Vaas hit three straight singles to load the bases against Tiger reliever Dean Stramara. A wild pitch, an error and a bases-loaded walk let three NSU runs cross the plate. Lee then hit an RBI single before Mahdi connected for a three-run homer to left, his fourth of the year and third of the week, to make it 13-2 in NSU's favor.
Towson scored five runs in the ninth as both teams substituted liberally. Spencer Sutton and Brady Policelli hit RBI doubles off Spartan reliever
Nick McGuire before three additional runs scored on a pair of two-out NSU errors. But Mauricio got Richie Palacios to hit into a fielder's choice to end the game.
Mahdi went 2-for-5 with four RBI Sunday. He also homered and drove in four in the series-opening victory for NSU on Friday. Mauricio finished 3-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI, his third career three-hit game and first of the season.
Hall and Vaas added two hits each for the Spartans. Lee drove in two runs, while Vaas and Dukes scored two times each.
Cooper Jones (1-1), the second of five Spartan pitchers, earned the pitching victory. He struck out three in 2.2 scoreless innings in relief of Boone, who went 3.1 innings and allowed just two unearned runs in his first career start.Â
Ross (0-2) took the loss for the Tigers after allowing three runs in five innings of work.
NSU plays at William & Mary on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Williamsburg.
