Box Score NEW YORK, N.Y. – Columbia made 16 3-pointers and shot exactly 50 percent from 3-point range on the way to an 86-54 win over the Norfolk State men's basketball team on Wednesday night in the first round of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament at Levien Gymnasium.
The Spartans were held to their second-lowest point total of the year as their season came to a close at 17-17 overall. Columbia (22-10) advanced to the next round of the CIT against a yet-to-be determined opponent.
NSU finished with a .500 record or better for the fifth straight year, the only program in the MEAC to do so.
The Lions made 16-of-32 from long range for the game and 47 percent overall (32-of-68). NSU was held to less than 30 percent shooting in the second half, part of a 21-of-61 effort overall (34.4 percent). No Spartan player reached double figures in scoring, the first NSU did not have anyone score at least 10 points since a loss at Nevada on Dec. 27, 2005.
Luke Petrasek led all players with 18 points. He shot 6-of-9 overall and 4-of-5 from 3-point range. Maodo Lo tallied 16 points, including a 4-of-8 effort from beyond the arc. Grant Mullins and Nate Hickman each scored 11 for Columbia and made three treys apiece.
On the flip side, NSU outscored the Lions 34-26 in points in the paint.
The Lions scored seven of the first nine points of the game and then later used a 16-5 run to push the lead to double digits 12 minutes into the contest. Columbia sank eight 3-pointers in the first half and closed it on a 19-6 run to double up the Spartans at the break, 42-21.
Three more 3-pointers extended the Lions' lead to 28 early in the second half. NSU picked up the scoring at its end but was still unable to get stops on the other side. The Lions hit five more 3-pointers within the first seven minutes coming out of the intermission.
Another trey by Lo and a fastbreak bucket by Kyle Castlin pushed the lead to 30 at the 11:45 mark. Their lead never got below 25 the rest of the way.

D'Shon Taylor led the Spartans with nine points and six rebounds. Senior

Preston Bungei and sophomore
Jordan Butler each added eight points. Bungei also topped his career high with a game-high eight boards.
NSU shot 2-of-18 from 3-point range.
Columbia turned the ball over just seven times compared to 11 for NSU. The Lions outscored the Spartans 14-2 in points off turnovers.
The contest also marked the last games for Taylor, Short and
Charles Oliver in an NSU uniform.
Short and Taylor both played two years at NSU, with Short arriving from Fordham and Taylor coming to Norfolk State via the junior college route. They combined for more than 2,000 career points with the Spartans.
Short was a two-time first-team All-MEAC performer, the fifth player in school history to do so. He is only one of seven players to score 1,000 points at NSU in just two seasons. He finished with 1,156, 32
nd all-time at the school. He also closed his career second all-time in free throw percentage (.821), seventh in 3-pointers (136), eighth in 3-point field goal attempts (361), ninth in 3-point field goal percentage (.377) and 16
th in scoring average (17.3). He tallied 261 rebounds, 152 assists, 60 steals and 18 blocks.
Like Short, Taylor also appeared in 67 career games. He finished his career with 880 points, averaging 13.1 per game. He contributed 345 rebounds with 96 assists, 66 steals and 45 blocks. He also ended his career 15
th all-time at NSU with 94 3-pointers, 16
th in 3-point field goal attempts (265) and 17
th in 3-point field goal percentage (.355).
Oliver competed for just one season this year as a graduate student transfer from Robert Morris. He played in all 34 games this year and made 18 starts. He ranked third on the team in scoring (11.9 points) and finished with totals of 405 points, 74 rebounds, 34 assists, 10 steals and two blocks. His 81.9 free throw percentage is the seventh best in the school's Division I history.
NSU will lose those three seniors but return nine other players from this year. The Spartans will also welcome two players in guard
Kerwin Okoro and center
Dan Robinson who sat out the season in addition to the 2016 recruiting class.
