NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State men's tennis team began the home portion of its 2016 spring season on Thursday morning with a 4-3 win over Fairmont State at the NSU Tennis Complex.
Â
The Spartans won the top three singles matches and both contested doubles matchups to improve to 2-10 on the year. NSU competed for the first time on its home court in three seasons after several years of renovations to the facility.
Â
Fairmont State (3-9) lost despite taking the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles matches due to NSU's short-handed lineup. The Spartans, though, won both of the other doubles contests to win the doubles point.

Sophomore
Fatehdeep Singh and freshman
Flavian Fernandez topped Micah Hornak and Aaron Leo by a 6-1 score at the top spot. At No. 2 doubles, freshmen
Benedikt Henning and
Dan Dumitrascu earned a 6-0 sweep of Noah Weber and Ryan Leo.
Â
Pejic was cruising through his match at No. 2 singles against Matheus Rodrigues, winning the first set 6-0 and going up by a 5-0 score in the second set before Rodrigues retired. Henning and Dumitrascu also earned easy victories as well.
Â
Henning topped Hornak at the No. 1 spot in the lineup, 6-1 and 6-1, while Dumitrascu made quick work of Aaron Leo at the third slot, 6-0 and 6-1.
Â
"It was a great day for the Spartan men to christen our new tennis facility with a win in its first match," said head coach
Worth Richardson. "Mentally and physically, we struggled at the bottom of our singles lineup but our top 3 and our doubles were lights out today."
Â
Fernandez was up by scores of 6-4 and 2-1 over Ryan Leo at the No. 5 position but retired after NSU had already secured the match win. Alec Moran posted Fairmont State's only earned win, 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 4 spot over Singh.
