Box Score 2 NORFOLK, Va. – Wagner used two-out rallies in the third innings of both games against Norfolk State to come away with an 8-1, 6-1 sweep of the Spartans on Sunday afternoon at
Marty L. Miller Field.
The Spartans (3-8) dropped their second and third straight games with Sunday's two defeats.
Wagner pitchers Austin Goeke and Matt Morris got more than enough help from their offense to back their strong starts on the mound. The pair combined to allow just one run over 10 innings of work.
In game 1, Wagner (3-2) struck first by scoring three times with two outs in the top of the second. Kyle Brey, Nick Mascelli and Trey Nicosia delivered three straight run-scoring RBI singles to put the Seahawks in front.
Spartan starter
Matt Outman settled down after that, holding Wagner scoreless over the next five frames. NSU then closed the gap to 3-1 in the seventh.
Roger Hall struck out but reached first base on a wild pitch. Pinch hitter
Kevin Granger then lashed a double to left to advance Hall to third base.
Tony Leite's sacrifice fly then scored Hall to make it 3-1.
But Wagner put it away with five runs in the eighth, coming off four hits and three NSU errors. Ben Ruta had the big blow in the inning, an RBI double.
Outman (1-1) took the loss despite striking out a season-high eight batters in seven innings. He allowed eight hits and three runs while walking two.
Wagner righty Goeke (1-1) got the win, allowing just two hits over five innings.
Brey and Mascelli combined for five hits and four RBI for Wagner in game 1. Mahdi, Granger,
Chase Anderson and
Justin Lee had the hits for NSU, which got outhit 13-4.
The third inning proved to be a struggle for NSU in game 2, as well. Sean Mazzio singled to lead off the inning and scored on a two-out passed ball. Ruta then hit a high chopper to short and beat the throw to first to score Nick Mascelli with the second run of the game.
The Spartans cut their deficit in half in the fifth.
Angel Rosario drew a two-out walk from Wagner starter Morris. Hall followed with a single, and Rosario scored on a dropped popup.
But the Seahawks added another two-out run in the sixth as Anthony Godino tripled with two away and scored on another passed ball, then added one run in the eighth and two in the ninth off NSU errors.
Devin Hemmerich (0-2) was the tough-luck loser, allowing three runs (two earned) in 5.2 innings pitched. He struck out five batters. Morris (1-0) got the win with five innings of work, allowing one unearned run while striking out three batters.
Mahdi and Anderson added hits in the second game, giving them each two for the doubleheader.
Mascelli had four hits in the second game and was 7-for-10 in the double-dip for Wagner.
The Spartans are back in action at North Carolina Central at 5 p.m. Wednesday in Durham, N.C.
