Matt Outman and
Jonathan Mauricio pitched matching seven-inning shutouts Saturday to lead the Spartans to a convincing 10-0, 12-0 sweep of Delaware State in a matchup of the MEAC Northern Division's top two teams at
Marty L. Miller Field.
With the wins, the Spartans (22-17, 15-4 MEAC) took a 4.5-game lead over the second-place Hornets (10-32, 10-8) in the northern division. NSU also tied the school single-season record with nine shutouts thanks to Saturday's sweep.
In game one, Outman (7-2) pitched a five-hit shutout with six strikeouts to pick up the 23rd win of his career, tying J.R. Wilkerson (1987-90) for the most in school history. The game was stopped after seven innings due to the 10-run rule. Mauricio (5-2) followed with a four-hit shutout in the seven-inning nightcap, matching his career high with nine strikeouts.
Senior outfielder
Angel Rosario knocked in seven runs on the day, three in the first game and four in the second.
In the opener, the Spartans scored twice in the second and seven times in the third to break the game open. In the second,
Alex Mauricio doubled with one out to put two runners in scoring position.
Chase Anderson's RBI groundout and
Justin Lee's infield single staked NSU to the 2-0 lead.
The Spartans sent 11 men to the plate in the third, getting a pair of doubles and taking advantage of four walks, a hit batter and one DSU error to score seven runs.
Roger Hall hit an RBI double and Rosario capped the rally with a two-out, three-run double to put the Spartans ahead 9-0.
After some early traffic on the bases, Outman settled in to get through seven innings. He walked five and struck out six batters in pitching his third shutout of the season. Outman has not been scored upon in his last four starts and now has a 31-inning scoreless streak dating to an April 2 start at Coppin State.
The Spartans wasted little time in jumping on the Hornets early in game two. Rosario tripled with one out in the bottom of the first. DSU starter Sean McGrath then hit
Brian Beard with a pitch. With runners on the corners, McGrath threw away an attempted pickoff throw at first, letting Rosario score and sending Beard to third. Hall then knocked in Beard with a groundout.
NSU extended its lead to 5-0 with a three-run bottom of the second.
Denathan Dukes hit a run-scoring single and Rosario had a two-run double, both with two outs.
Rosario added an RBI single in the fourth and drove in another run with a grounder in NSU's five-run fifth.
Tony Leite capped the scoring with an RBI double in the sixth.
Rosario finished the doubleheader 4-for-8 with seven RBI. Lee had three hits, three RBI and scored four runs. Hall also tallied three hits (all in the opener) and three RBI.
Dukes and Anderson had two hits apiece in the nightcap.Â
Mauricio scattered four hits and four walks and matched his April 16 win over UMES by striking out nine. Outman and Mauricio also pitched back-to-back shutouts that day, as well. The Spartans have shut out their opponents in six of their last eight MEAC games.
The teams are slated to play another doubleheader starter at noon on Sunday.
