Box Score 2 TOWSON, Md. – Towson scored five runs in the fifth inning of both games of a non-conference doubleheader to sweep two from the Norfolk State softball team on Tuesday afternoon at the Towson Softball Stadium.
The Tigers scored eight runs in the last two innings to win 10-2 in six innings in the opener. Towson again had a five-run fifth inning in game 2, won by an 8-0 margin in those five innings.
The Spartans were held to just six hits on the day, including two in game 2 by Towson pitcher Ambar Hickman, who threw a five-inning, complete game shutout. The Tigers ran their record to 24-10 on the season while dropping the Spartans to 10-16.
Neither team could get much going in game 1 until the Tigers scored two runs in the fourth on a pair of RBI hits. The Spartans tied it up at 2-2 in the top of the fifth, the first run scoring on an RBI double by sophomore
Seana Moriarty and then the second on an RBI single by junior
Kayla McNair.
The Tigers then broke the game open against NSU starter
Marissa Marrero with five runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth. Brook Miko hit a two-run double in each inning to highlight the late scoring. She finished 3-for-4 with five RBI in the contest. The 3-6 hitters in Towson's lineup combined for nine of the team's 11 hits.
Megan Dejter (9-6) pitched all six innings and allowed four hits and two runs, one earned.
Towson got an RBI single in the first inning of game 2 and then back-to-back RBI doubles in the third for a 3-0 lead over NSU. Courtney Johnson hit a three-run double in the fifth to highlight the five-run inning and eventually end the game on the eight-run rule.
Hickman (8-3) walked two and allowed the two hits in those five innings of work.
Moriarty was the only Spartan player with two hits on the day.
NSU will host Morgan State this weekend at the NSU Softball Field to resume MEAC play. The two squads will play a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday and a single game at noon on Sunday.
