HARRISONBURG, Va. – Paula Fotuno improved to 5-2 on the season in singles play, but the Norfolk State women's tennis team fell to James Madison 6-1 on Saturday afternoon at the Hillside Courts on the campus of James Madison.
The Dukes (12-5) took four of the six singles matches in straight sets and also won both of the doubles matches by a comfortable margin, dropping the Spartans to 1-6 on the season.
In singles action, Fortuno improved to 4-1 at the No. 3 position, defeating the Dukes' Rachel Nelson in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
James Madison cruised to straight-set victories at the Nos. 1, 2, 4 and 5 positions, while garnering a win by default at the No. 6 position, due to an injury sustained by
Liza Gordeeva during the road trip to Orlando.
Dajana Cvjetkovic and
Aranza Mellet fell to James Madison's Timea Guibe and Dylan Owens by identical 6-0, 6-1 scores at the Nos. 1 and 5 singles positions, respectively. Norfolk State's
Ana Popovic fell 6-2, 6-0 against Jona Roka at the No. 2 position, while
Bruna Goncalves dropped her No. 4 position match 6-1, 6-0 to Kimmy Herrock.
Guibe and Herrock teamed up as the Dukes' top doubles team and cruised to a 6-0 victory over the Spartans' duo of Cvjetkovic and Fortuno. James Madison's pair of Rebecca Harris and Emma Petersen secured the doubles point with a 6-3 victory over Norfolk State's team of Popovic and Goncalves at the No. 2 position.
The Spartan women will open their home schedule on Friday when they host MEAC Northern Division foe Howard at 1 p.m. at the Norfolk State Tennis Complex.
