SINKING SPRING, Pa. – The Norfolk State bowling team won twice on Sunday to cap its performance in the Golden Bear Classic hosted by Kutztown over the weekend at Berks Lanes.
The Spartans defeated New Jersey City both times on the last day of the 16-team tournament, finishing up a 4-8 overall weekend. It marked NSU's first live action in three months.
NSU needed a rally in Sunday's bracket round to close out the tournament. In a best-of-7 series, the Spartans fell behind by a 3-1 margin. But they came back to defeat New Jersey City in the final three games, 159-140, 215-158 and 179-156, to take the match, 4-3.
They also defeated New Jersey City in the first match of the day by a 4-1 score. Again, the Spartans won the last three games of the match. In between, Walsh won the last three games to defeat the Spartans by a 4-2 margin in the middle round of the day.
Norfolk State also beat New Jersey City and Walsh during the first two days of the tournament. The victory over New Jersey City came during day 1 on Friday in the last match of the day, 766-703. It allowed the Spartans to end on a high note after dropping the first three games in Baker play, including losses to No. 24 Adelphi (933-803), Chestnut Hill College (922-820) and Caldwell (934-740).
On day 2 on Saturday, the Spartans got their lone win by just one pin during the second match of the morning, 834-833 over Walsh. No. 17 LIU Brooklyn handed NSU a loss in the first match of the day, 1,041-724. The Spartans also fell to three other teams later in the day in Wilmington (934-802), Kutztown (782-711) and LIU Post (798-783).
The Spartans will compete next weekend at the James Brown Invitational hosted by Morgan State.
