LANDOVER, Md. – Kellyann James and
Caroline Samoei both recorded top-six finishes in their respective events for the Norfolk State women's track and field team during day one of competition Thursday at the MEAC Indoor Championships at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex.
The Spartans have eight points through Thursday's two events, good for a third-place tie with South Carolina State in the team standings behind Florida A&M (25) and Bethune-Cookman (18).
James, a senior, picked up five points for NSU by placing fourth in the long jump. Her top jump was 17 feet, 11.75 inches, which came on her sixth and final event and moved her up from eighth place to fourth.
Samoei, a junior, finished sixth in the 5,000 meters in a time of 19 minutes, 2.38 seconds.
Also on Thursday,
Kiara Grant was the fourth-fastest qualifier in the preliminaries of the women's 200 meters. She won her heat in 24.68 seconds to qualify for Saturday's final.
Competition resumes at 9 a.m. Friday.
