NORFOLK, Va. – Andy Garriola and Erik Stock combined for seven hits, six runs batted in and a pair of solo homers to lead Old Dominion to an 11-0 win over Norfolk State on Tuesday at the Bud Metheny Complex.
ODU (4-2) scored in seven of its eight innings at bat to down the Spartans (0-7).
Ryne Moore (1-0) struck out nine over seven innings of three-hit ball to get the win on the mound for the Monarchs. He and Hunter Gregory combined for 14 strikeouts.
ODU scored at least one run in each of the first five innings. Kyle Battle led off the bottom of the first with a triple and scored on an infield hit from Matt Burch. In the second, Garriola and Stock hit back-to-back solo homers to widen the lead to 3-0. Garriola tacked on a sacrifice fly in the third and Battle hit an RBI single in the fifth to extend the lead to 5-0.
Garriola added a two-run double in ODU's three-run eighth.
NSU had two good chances to score. In the first,
Caleb Ward and
Korey Singh had consecutive two-out singles, but Moore escaped the inning unscathed. In the eighth,
Brandon Crosby and
Dionte Brown hit back-to-back one-out singles, but Gregory struck out the next two hitters to keep the Spartans off the board.
Ward went 2-for-4 for the Spartans, his second straight two-hit game.
Kevin Alicea (0-1) was charged with the loss on the mound, allowing three runs over the first two innings of work.
Stock went 5-for-5 with two RBIs and Garriola was 2-for-4 while driving in four. Battle and Burch added three hits apiece for ODU.
NSU hosts Quinnipiac for a three-game series this Friday through Sunday at
Marty L. Miller Field.
