GREENSBORO, N.C. – Junior
Daiysa Burrell won her first career MEAC track and field medal as she finished as the runner-up in the discus throw on Thursday at the 2019 MEAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships on the campus of North Carolina A&T.
Burrell notched a personal-best throw of 142 feet, 11 inches to claim the silver and record eight points toward NSU's team total. Through three events scored, the Spartans are in fourth place with 11 points. Florida A&M leads with 52.5, followed by Bethune-Cookman (21) and N.C. A&T (18.5).
Caroline Samoei and
Fridah Koech also scored points for the Spartans Thursday by placing seventh and eighth, respectively, in the 10,000 meters.
Thursday also featured a strong showing by the Spartans in the 200-meter heats.
Kiara Grant won her heat in a PR of 23.54 seconds, and
Tyrika Lee also qualified for Saturday's event final in a PR of 23.72. Though they did not qualify for the final,
Malika Pride (23.74) and
DaJah Parker-Love (23.79) also posted personal best times.
Day two of the championships gets underway at 9 a.m. Friday.
