GREENSBORO, N.C. – Track and field may be
Bobby Price's second sport at Norfolk State, but you wouldn't know it by watching him Friday.
An All-MEAC safety in football, Price soared onto the top of the medal podium in the long jump with a personal-best jump of 25 feet, 10.25 inches to win the conference title on Friday at the MEAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships at North Carolina A&T.
The conference outdoor meet is just Price's fourth track competition of the year. Prior to February, the junior standout had not participated in track and field since his senior year of high school. He placed fourth in the long jump at the MEAC Indoor Championships in February, one of two indoor meets he participated in. Price then took two months off to participate in spring football practice.
Price resumed his track season two weeks ago with a PR of 23-9.5 at the Virginia Challenge. Friday, he easily leapt past that mark four times. He jumped 23-10.75 on his first attempt to take the lead, then extended his advantage with a mark of 25-0.75 on his second try.
N.C. A&T's Brandon Hicklin surged into the lead with a third jump of 25-5.25. Price posted a jump of 25-3.25 on his third try, then fell short of that on his fourth try and fouled on his fifth attempt. On his sixth and final attempt, Price uncorked his winning jump, which is the longest by a Spartan since Marlon Woods and Corey Vinston both jumped 26+ feet at the 2008 MEAC Outdoor Championships. Coming into Friday, Price's jump would rank him ninth-best in the NCAA East Region.
Price's performance was the highlight of day two for the Spartans, who ended the day third in the team standings with 64 points following eight of 21 events. Bethune-Cookman is first with 91, and N.C. A&T is second with 67.5.
The Spartans did score in three other events Friday.
Evans Cheruiyot won the silver medal in the 3,000m steeplechase. He clocked a time of 9 minutes, 29.25 seconds, just .19 behind winner Carlin Berryhill of Bethune-Cookman.
Meshack Kipchirchir was fourth in the same event in 9:37.75.
In other field events,
Byron Carson placed sixth in the decathlon and
Zaire Barnes was eighth in the shot put.
In Friday's heats, junior
Jaylen Banks clocked a PR of 14.05 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles to advance to Saturday's final.
Trequan Barnes won his heat in the 400 meters in 46.97 seconds to secure his spot in the event final.
Saturday's final day of competition starts at 9 a.m. Running events will be streamed on FloTrack beginning at 1 p.m.
