EKU Outslugs NSU, 13-7

RICHMOND, Ky. – A.J. Lewis and Nick Howie both had three hits and hit a solo home run to lead Eastern Kentucky to a 13-7 win and series sweep over Norfolk State on Sunday at Earle Combs Stadium.

First baseman Korey Singh homered and had a career-high four hits for the Spartans (2-13), who outhit EKU (11-2) by a 15-14 margin.

EKU scored seven times in the first four innings. The first four of those runs scored with two outs. In the first, Lewis tripled and scored on Charles Ludwick's single. In the second, Howie singled in a run and Lewis tripled again, this time with two outs, to drive in two runs and give the Colonels a 4-0 lead.

The Spartans began chipping away in the third. Singh led off with a solo home run to right field, his first of the season. Brandon Crosby followed with a single and scored on an RBI double off the bat of Jaran Davis. Ty Hanchey also doubled to keep the inning alive and Mason Velasquez singled in Davis with two outs.

The Colonels kept coming. Marcus Hill knocked in a run with a single in the third, and both Howie and Lewis hit solo homers in the fourth to stretch the EKU lead to 7-3.

EKU tacked on six more in the seventh to put the game out of reach for NSU.

Despite trailing by 10, the Spartans kept battling, scoring four more times in the eighth. Davis knocked in his second run of the game when he scored Collins with a groundout. Ty Hanchey then hit a two-run, two-out single and scored on Alsander Womack's double to bring NSU within 13-7.

Singh went 4-for-4 and scored twice. Womack (2-for-4), Hanchey (2-for-5), Adam Collins (2-for-5) and Caleb Ward (2-for-4) added two hits apiece. Davis and Hanchey both had two RBIs.

Seth Hockett (0-1) took the loss on the mound for the Spartans. He pitched 6.2 innings and gave up 11 runs on 11 hits.

NSU is back in action Tuesday in a 3 p.m. game at Old Dominion.
