LYNCHBURG, Va. – Trequan Barnes broke his own school record in the 500-meter dash Saturday as the Spartans wrapped up their second meet of the indoor season at the Liberty Elite Invitational.
Barnes clocked a time of 1:02.82 in his second-place finish. He trailed only post-collegiate athlete Alejandro Zapata, who ran a world-leading time of 1:00.66.
The performance comes on the heels of Barnes' victory in the 400m last weekend at South Carolina.
"Tre was very aggressive from the start of the race, coming through 300m in 34.22 and 400m in 47.94. That set the stage for a great PR and school record," said NSU Director of Track & Field
Kenneth Giles of Barnes, who previous school record of 1:03.22 was set last year at Albany. "He is rewriting school records in the longer oval races."
The Spartans had several other top-five finishes on the track over the weekend.
Kai Cole was runner-up in the 60 in 6.80 seconds.
Kamil Jihad finished third in the 1,000 meters in 2:34.73, and
Savien Hayes placed fifth in the 400 meters in 50.73.
The field contingent was led by sophomore
Azad Williams, who posted a season-best in the shot put (49 feet, 8.5 inches). That was good for fourth place.
Freshman Rodric Cox-Cooper took fifth in the long jump with a top throw of 22-5.25. Redshirt freshman
Joshua Sutton also jumped well, finishing sixth in the high jump (6-6.75).
The Spartans are next in action on Monday, Feb. 1 in the first of their two meets at the Virginia Beach Sports Center, the Virginia Beach Open. The meet will be hosted by the University of Virginia.
