NORFOLK, Va. – Denisha Megginson led a strong offensive day for the Spartans with four hits and five runs batted in, sparking Norfolk State to a 10-3, 9-1 sweep of a MEAC doubleheader with Coppin State at the NSU Softball Field.
Megginson was 2-for-3 with two RBIs in the game one, then went 2-for-2 with a home run and three RBIs in the nightcap for NSU (12-12, 5-5 MEAC), which finished with 20 hits on the day.
Alexis Robinson and Cam Anderson picked up the wins in the circle for the Spartans, who have won five of their last six games.
In the opener, the Spartans jumped ahead early with six runs on three hits and two CSU errors in the first.
Brooke Bond doubled in a run, while Megginson and
Gabby Vaughan both had run-scoring singles in the inning.
Tuli Iosefa smacked an RBI double in the second and Megginson singled in another run in the fourth as the Spartans widened their margin.
Imani Moore,
Lily Potter and
Jazzmaine Hammond each scored a pair of runs in the opener.
Robinson (3-5) picked up the win in game one for the Spartans. She worked 4.1 innings and allowed two earned runs. Robinson struck out two and did not walk a batter. Kirstin Greene (1.2 innings) and
Skylar Swain (1.0) combined to pitch 2.2 innings of scoreless relief to close out the win.
Just like in the opener, the Spartans struck early in game two. Moore singled, stole second base and eventually scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first, and NSU never looked back.
Iosefa singled in two runs in the second, and Hammond did likewise in the third to stretch NSU's lead to 5-0.
Megginson broke the game open with a three-run home run in the fourth, her team-leading fourth blast of the season.
CSU (1-16, 1-5) did not manage a hit in the first three innings against the Spartan starter Andersen. The only run the Eagles could muster came in the fifth, as Destinee Carrizosa tripled and scored on a wild pitch.
Anderson cruised otherwise, pitching all six innings for her fourth complete game of the season. She gave up just two hits and the one run while striking out eight hitters.
Megginson, Iosefa, Hammond and
Alison Guckin had two hits apiece in the nightcap as NSU recorded 13 hits in all. Megginson knocked in three and scored twice, while Hammond and Iosefa both two RBIs apiece.
The teams play another doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon. Three NSU seniors will be honored prior to the two games, NSU's last scheduled home contests of the season.
