GREENSBORO, N.C. – Rodric Cox-Cooper claimed the silver medal in the long jump Friday, one of a number of key performances that helped the Spartans maintain their lead in the men's standings through day two of the 2021 MEAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Irwin Belk Track.
Cox-Cooper's best jump was 22 feet, 10.5 inches. Teammate
Camren Wynder-Hill capped his busy day by taking eighth in the same event (21-6).
Wynder-Hill is in first place in the decathlon at the halfway mark. He has 3,110 points so far as the Spartans occupy the top four places.
Joshua Sutton (2,991) is in second,
Sadiq Nurse is third (2,874) and
Biagio Perrello (2,667) is in fourth.
Sutton also placed fourth in the high jump Friday with a top clearance of 6-2. Other top field event performances on day two included a second-place finish Friday from
Jahquan Christopher in the pole vault (9-1) and a seventh-place showing by
Azad Williams in the hammer (124-5).
The only track final run on Friday was the steeplechase, and the Spartans swept third through fifth place.
Meshack Kipchirchir led the way with a bronze medal, clocking a time of 9:56.54.
Evans Cheruiyot was fourth in 10:04.87 and
Isa Suleiman came in fifth in 10:08.30.
The other track events contested Friday were preliminary heats. Advancing to event finals on Saturday were
Kai Cole (10.43) and
Anthony Franklin (10.53) in the 100 meters,
Trequan Barnes (46.90) in the 400,
Kamil Jihad (1:54.73) in the 800 and Wynder-Hill (14.74) in the 110m hurdles.
The final day of competition begins at 9 a.m. Saturday with the conclusion of the decathlon. Running events begin at noon and will be broadcast live on FloTrack.
