VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Tynniesia Wilson won gold in the women's high jump and
Arieana Parker did likewise in the weight throw to lift the Norfolk State women's track and field team into first place after day two of the MEAC Indoor Championships at the Virginia Beach Sports Center.
NSU enters Wednesday's final day with 62 total points, two ahead of second-place Howard.
The Spartans scored points in all four events which were completed on Tuesday. Three Spartans scored in the pentathlon, with
Dahja Price taking third (2,999 points),
Shirelle Linzy fifth (2,786) and
Shonte Seale sixth (2,613).
Wilson then picked up NSU's first win of the day, clearing 5 feet, 1.25 inches to take the high jump gold. Seale capped her busy day by finishing third in the high jump (4-11) less than an hour after the pentathlon competition concluded.
A short time later, Parker cemented her status as the best in the weight throw. Parker, the top seed, won her first career gold with a top throw of 57-6.5. Teammate
Leslie Young was third (54-1.25).
Capping off the day, the quartet of
Fridah Koech,
Malika Pride, Wilson and
Kara Grant earned bronze in the distance medley relay. They crossed the line in 12:37.14.
In Tuesday's heats, three Spartans qualified through the preliminaries in the 60-meter hurdles.
Indya Richards and
Alyssa Thompson-Rowe had the two fastest qualifying times and teammate
Zion Smith will join them in the final. Richards and Thompson-Rowe also advanced in the 60 meters, and
Malika Pride was the second-fastest in the 400-meter heats. The finals of those three events are Wednesday.
Wednesday's final day of action will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the women's pole vault. Running events will start at 12:30 p.m. with the women's mile.
