WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Malika Pride,
De'Niya Gravely and
Leslie Young all notched wins to highlight a strong opening to the outdoor track season for the Spartan women last weekend at the Colonial Relays.
Coming off a runner-up finish in the 400 at the MEAC indoor meet in February, Pride started outdoor season in fine fashion. She cruised to a win in the 400 meters by posting a time of 54.23 seconds.
Other top finishes on the track included Alyssa Thompson-Rose and
Zion Smith placing 2-3 in the 100 meter hurdles. Thompson-Rowe posted a time of 14.41 seconds, with Smith close behind in 14.64.
The Spartans also had a strong weekend in the field. Gravely posted a big PR in the triple jump with a top leap of 39 feet, 3 inches to win the university division. Young, meanwhile, was top four in three throwing events. She won the javelin with a top throw of 111-3, was runner-up in the shot put (41-2.5) and finished fourth in the discus (133-3).
Elsewhere,
Indya Richards claimed a seventh-place finish in the long jump (18-2.5),
Tynniesia Wilson was eighth in the high jump (5-3.25) and
D'Nysha Brightful cleared 10-2 in the pole vault.
The Spartans are back in action this weekend at the Duke Invitational in Durham.
