NORFOLK, Va. – Indya Richards placed second in the long jump and ran a PR in the 100-meter hurdles for the NSU women's track and field team on day 2 of the 2022 MEAC Outdoor Championships on Friday at Dick Price Stadium.
Fridah Koech (3,000 steeplechase) and
Leslie Young (shot put) captured two more runner-up finishes for the Spartans, helping them finish the day in second place in the team standings. NSU has 56 points, and first-place Morgan State 70.
Richards posted a season-best jump in the long jump, taking silver with a mark of 19 feet, 4.75 inches. She also was the second-fastest qualifier for Saturday's final in the 110 hurdles, posting a PR of 13.90 seconds – her first time under 14.00. It also came into a headwind.
Richards was one of three NSU qualifiers for Saturday's 100-meter hurdle finals.
Zion Smith also posted a PR of 14.22 seconds and
Alyssa Thompson Rowe (14.51) also advanced.
Koech posted a time of 11:50.13 in the steeplechase to reach the medal podium for the second time at this meet. She also finished third in Thursday's 10,000 meters.
In the field, Young continued her strong start to the meet with another silver medal finish. She had a best effort of 43-10 in the shot put to place second, one day after also placing second in the discus.
Arieana Parker was eighth in the shot on Friday.
Dahja Price also scored key points for NSU Friday with her third-place finish in the women's heptathlon. She scored a career-best 4,004 points.
Jada Venters and
Shonte Seale placed seventh and eighth, respectively, in the event.
Other qualifiers in Friday's track events included
De'Niya Gravely (11.83) and
Shirelle Linzy (12.06) in the 100 meters,
Malika Pride in the 400 (55.44) and
Kara Grant in the 800 (2:12.45). Gravely and Linzy both set new personal records in the process of advancing to Saturday's final.
Day 3 gets underway at 10 a.m. Saturday with the women's javelin and pole vault and men's triple jump. Running events begin at 1 p.m. with the 4x100 relay. Saturday's action will be streamed live on the MEAC Digital Network YouTube Page.
