NORFOLK, Va. – MEAC Field MVP Leslie Young and Kara Grant secured gold medals on Saturday to help the NSU women's track and field team finish as the runner-up at the 2022 MEAC Outdoor Championships at Dick Price Stadium.

The Spartans finished the meet with 166 points. Howard won it with 226.

Young won the javelin throw on Saturday with a best effort of 120 feet, 10 inches, a new PR for the freshman. Earlier in the meet, she was runner-up in the discus and shot put and took fourth in the hammer. Her 31 points was the most of any women's field competitor at the meet.

Grant dug deep on the final lap of the 1,500 meters, putting on a late push in the final 150 meters to just catch Howard's Melanie White at the finish line with a time of 4:48.61. Grant out-leaned White to win by five one-thousandths of a second.

The Spartans started the day by picking up 13 points in the pole vault. D'Nysha Brightful finished second with a top height of 9 feet, 11.75 inches, and Destiny Hooks took fourth (8-11.75). Shonte Seale added a fourth-place finish in the javelin (107-6) to the Spartans' haul in the field events.

All three Spartans who qualified for the finals in the 100-meter hurdles set new personal bests. Indya Richards finished as runner-up in 13.62 seconds. Zion Smith placed sixth in 13.89 and Alyssa Thompson Rowe finished seventh in 13.96.

The Spartans also got a runner-up finish from Fridah Koech in the 5,000m (19:11.30) and third-place finishes from Malika Pride in the 400 (53.67) and the 4x100 relay team of Richards, Thompson Rowe, Shirelle Linzy and De'Niya Gravely (46.06). Gravely also recorded a fourth-place finish in the 100 in a PR of 11.86.

The NSU women's program completed the year's MEAC running seasons with one championship (cross country) and two runner-up finishes (indoor and outdoor track and field).
