Kimaiyo and Young Claim Victories at KPMG HBCU Showcase

NEW YORK, N.Y. | Mercyline Kimaiyo and Leslie Young captured victories as the Norfolk State University women's indoor track and field team finished second at the Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs) Showcase, presented by KPMG on Saturday at the Armory Track and Field Center.
 
Kimaiyo won the women's one mile, while Young recorded the top spot in the weight throw.
 
Norfolk State finished second with 95 points as North Carolina A&T State won the meet with 138 points. Florida A&M placed third (67.5 points), followed by Prairie View A&M (64), Howard (53), Delaware State (52), Coppin State (29), District of Columbia (26), Johnson C. Smith (23), St. Augustine's (15.5), Florida Memorial (15), Livingstone (13), Central State (11), Lincoln (Pa.) (7), Maryland Eastern Shore (7) and Winston-Salem State.
 
In the 60m, De'Niya Gravely finished sixth in the preliminaries to qualify for the final round, where she grabbed eighth, with a time of 7.86.
 
The 60m hurdles saw three Spartans finish inside the top eight, led by Indya Richards, logging a time of 8.56. Zion Smith (8.91) and Tamesia Pinnix (8.97) placed sixth and seventh, respectively. Shirelle Linzy nabbed ninth, with a time of 9.13.
 
Armani Harris just missed grabbing a point in the 400m, taking 10th in 59.90.
 
In the one mile, the Spartans nabbed three spots in the top five as Kimaiyo won the event, edging teammate Kara Grant. Kimaiyo crossed in 5:08.25, while Grant finished in 5:08.48. Tynniesia Wilson placed fifth in 5:29.85.
 
Young and Arieana Parker went 1-2 in the weight throw as Norfolk State racked up 18 points. Young won the event, with a toss of 17.61m (57-09.50), while Parker placed second at 17.53m (57-06.25).
 
In the shot put, Young just missed the top spot, taking second, with a toss of 12.90m (42-04.00).
 
De'Diya Gravely also missed the top spot in the triple jump, with a leap of 11.35m (37-03.00), which was good for second place.
 
Tynniesia Wilson led the way in the high jump, placing third, with a leap of 1.55m (5-01.00) and Essence Shaw claimed seventh at 1.47m (4-09.75).
 
In the pole vault, Dnyshe Brightful placed third, with a leap of 3.01m (9-10.50) and Destiny Hooks grabbed fifth at 2.81m (9-01.50).
 
Richards and Linzy finished second and fifth, respectively, in the long jump. Richards recorded a jump of 5.58m (18-03.75), while Linzy was 5.42m (17-09.50).
 
Norfolk State returns to action January 27-28 at the Penn State National Open in University Park, Pa.
