NSU Cruises to Win at 60th Annual East Coast Invitational

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. | The Norfolk State University women's indoor track and field team prepared for next week's Kenneth Giles Invitational by winning the three-team field at the 60th Annual East Coast Invitational on Friday at the Virginia Beach Sports Center.
 
The Spartans won the 13-event with 198.50 points, with Maryland Eastern Shore claiming second with 122.50 points. Voorhees College wrapped up the scoring in third with eight points.
 
Indya Richards won the 60m dash, clocking a time of 7.75.
 
It was nearly a clean sweep in the 60m hurdles for the Spartans. Shonte Seale won the event in 9.61. NSU took 3rd through 8th. Keyana Yeoman (8.96) placed third, followed by Brooklyn Robinson (8.96), Richards (8.69), Zion Smith (8.88), Tamesia Pinnix (9.12), Jada Venters (9.59) and Essence Shaw (10.33).
 
Kara Grant won the 1 mile and edging Mercyline Kimaiyo by registering a time of 5:20.61. Kimaiyo, who logged a time of 5:20.65, was cruising until the final lap when Grant pushed past her for the win.
 
Grant wrapped up a big day by winning the 800m and beating out teammate Tynniesia Wilson. Grant crossed the line in 2:15.21, while Wilson was 2:15.76. Kimiayo placed third in 2:25.84.
 
In the weight throw, Norfolk State held the top two spots as Arieana Parker won the event, with a toss of 17.82m, while Leslie Young placed second at 16.82m.
 
Young helped NSU take the top three spots in the shot put, with a toss of 13.71m. Parker claimed second at 11.44m and Shonte Seale wrapped up the scoring at 10.49m.
 
It was a clean sweep in the long jump, led by Richards with a leap of 5.50m. Corryn Conner placed second at 5.27m and Seale third at 5.15m. Essence Shaw claimed fourth in 5:04m.
 
In the pole vault, Dynshe Brightful finished second in 2.90m, and Destiny Hooks claimed the third spot in 2.75m.
 
It was nearly a clean sweep in the high jump, with Wilson winning the event, with a jump of 1.57m. Robinson and Seale placed second and third, respectively, in 1.52m and 1.47m. Shaw wrapped up the scoring at 1.47m.
 
Norfolk State wraps up its two week stretch in Virginia Beach next weekend as the Spartans host the Kenneth Giles Invitational, starting with competition beginning on Friday and concluding with events on Saturday.
